SUP?
The Waterman banner ad up there ^^^ got me thinking. I'm in an absolutely perfect place for it right now (two rivers come together to form a big harbor with all kinds of marshland and little islands all over the place, all enclosed by a barrier beach with decent waves from time to time) and I'll be spending a lot of time here going forward and I was thinking maybe I should pick a board up.
Anybody into this? Any tips, etc.? How much should I pay for a board? What are good brands?
And so on.

I live sort of near you- northern VA. I got one in 2008, freakin amazing workout. If I do it for a day, I feel worked as shit for the next 2. If you want to look at em in the DC area I'd go to REI, they had a few last time I was there.
I got the 11'3" pictured on this page- it has built in traction on the top and padded rails.

It's really durable. If I had to do it over, I'd get a Naish or Jimmy Lewis.

We've tried it on the rivers here. I could see it being cool for something like that. I'm sure the balance aspect of it couldn't hurt your skiing too.

I really shouldn't have to tell you... Surf forum!
In all seriousness, if you have the means, it can be a really cool way to dick around in a new environment. Go used, if possible. However, the learning curve is steep for a brief period. Like a day. So don't be afraid to get yourself in over your head with the purchase of a new toy. You can always justify it as an investment in fitness.
You may also need to invest in a water-proof fanny pack, as the sport is quite weed friendly. Nay, SUP demands stoned participants!

What I was kinda thinking. Not so pumped about the fitness aspect, more about the stoned-checking-shit-out part.

I've dicked around on one for a few hours. The novelty aspect wears off pretty quick and then you're stuck wishing you were in a kayak.

A kayak is much better, There are places for beer and stuff. And, you're sitting down.

supn just looks to me like a good way to make selfpropeled travel on the water colder/wetter/more uncomfortable/harder than it needs to be

Norm Hahn did a 385 km SUP to bring bring awareness to tankers on the BC coast ... Brian his support guy had never been in a kayak
