PSA: Mount your own fucking skis.

So , my understanding is that the goal is matching the center of the boot ( which is marked) and the preferred line in the ski.
I have remounted using existing holes and from what I can tell, the mount is too far forward and was probably for a much larger boot? Is this the right thinking? The pencil lines on the boots show boot marked centre and the matching Hoji recommended mount point.

That's so close (+5/6mm?) you won't notice the difference.

^^^ Seems I am seeing something completely different from your pic. It looks like you are more like an inch forward of recommended.
Isn’t hoji mount point already pretty far forward ?
If thats the case I’d be redrilling .

The recommended mount is 4 cm back from mid ( 88-4). The mount right now is 3cm forward of that mark ( for a 310 bsl. ) I think the pic is misleading. The forward mark is by the sticky on bottom of pic. If it was only the 3-5 mm I agree I wouldn’t worry about it ... but it is more than that unfortunately.
So either the person was Bigfoot and is a 330 bsl or was mounted forward accidentally on purpose? The mid line for a 310 matches almost exactly the Center line on the ski at 88.

Yeah redrill. i found the hoji most fun with bsl at side cut center. Rec is 1.5-3cm fwd of side cut depending on size.

From what I read... I double checked with a straight pull from tails, found / confirmed the 88, then go 4 back ... these are 187’s .

^^^^ that what I thought as I typed and did the math . Maybe keeping it simple for those peeps mounting at home. 1 beer becomes 4 pretty quick.

The old Rossi jigs required 5mm of forward movement from rec when drilling the heel pieces

So I'm mounting some new-to-me skis Reusing two binding freedom holes from a previous mount and I want to put inserts in the rest. Is there any reason for me not to go straight to drilling for inserts vs. drilling + mounting normally first?

Going straight to inserts is fine but you should always pilot drill first before using the larger diameter QK/BF bit.

    I'm confused.
What is straight pull length of entire ski. A 187 hoji I imagine is at least 184 actual length. Split that in half and you have 92. If you minus the recommended -4, you get the recommended 88 measurement.
    88 IS your mark.
    What am I missing here?

I didn't do that when I just installed inserts, and the instructions didn't mention it - but if you're using a hand drill it could help you get a cleaner and more centered hole when you use the F bit for the inserts.

I've been trying to understand what's going on with these too and I can't make sense of it. Where does the 88 come from. Is this as simple as dividing 187 or a bit less by 2 and getting 88 as your answer and going with that for ski center? I would think more like 92 or 93 also. Whatever it is it should get you to the same spot measuring from tip and tail.

The pull is measured from the tail.
I think I am overthinking this as well.

    Yep.
What I'm saying is just make sure the mark is in fact 88 and put your boot center there. You don't need to measure -4 as it has been done for you

where are you getting the 88 from? and what point on the ski do you believe this is giving you?

Think about how one measures ski length tip to tail across the top OR tip to tail across the bottom which has an increased circufrence ?

which is probaby why recommendations for ski center are given from tail

My gut feeling is that this isn't the issue here. Something else in play, likely the "88"
