Best Cool Little Cities
Rather than hijack the "rate these cities" thread I decided to start one of my own on cool little cities. You know the ones near great outdoor experiences, have a decent night life and food scene. Sadly a lot of them are tourist meccas and can get a little artificial but the coolest ones don't so much. (And I know no place is perfect every city has an under belly)
I'll throw a few out to start. Portsmouth, NH ... Santa Fe, NM ... Halifax, NS.Damn, we're in a tight spot!

I love Halifax but I'll take Portland ME over it any day. Smaller, funkier, grungier, more ferries, better restaurants, closer to skiing.
A cool place that no one would ever think of is New Bedford. It's on a huge upswing, you can buy waterfront/waterview property for nothing, all them Portagees can fucking cook their asses off, it's an hour from Boston and 2.5 from NYC, it's a happening little burgh lately.
Yeah I said New Bedford. What?

I hear you on New Bedford. I remember driving through there years ago thinking the city not only had some terrific waterfront but that it has "great bones."
Yeah Portland beats Halifax. And once you are 20 miles out of Halifax you are a long way from anything (which is good and bad).Last edited by Obstruction; 11-22-2011 at 09:20 AM.

Boone a "city?" That's a bit of a stretch, no?
Burlington, VT is pretty badass. Surprisingly so is Omaha, NE.

Feel free to laugh me out of here, downhill skiing is non-existant, but Iowa City, IA is a great outdoor/active-friendly community, with lots of great food options, too. I wouldn't plan a weeklong getaway, but if you're traveling through, make a pit-stop.
Only because proximity to mountains wasn't a criteria.
