    Automatic Setting Clock?

So I've got this alarm clock that sets the time by itself. It even knew about DST ending this morning and had the time correct. How does it do it? I know some local TV stations broadcast time signals but I live in Summit, nothing up here. WWV? This thing cost $9 at Walmart and it has a shortwave receiver built in? I tried an internet search a while ago, no luck.

It's magic, don't worry about it.

Now, why all the backslahes appear in posts with quotes, that's a real mystery...

Mine resets too. Except it went an hour back last week and has been wrong since the stupid extension of DST. Thankfully I didn't work last Sunday.

Oh thanks, now that song is stuck in my head! At least there is some fresh snow so I'm going skiing in a bit.

It's just programmed with the DST change dates. I have a decent Sony iPod dock one that also changes itself, and I know it doesn't get the time over the air because it didn't keep very good time. (OK, 5 minutes over 3 years isn't that bad, but still proves it's not getting an atomic clock signal.)

Don't you usually set it? My clock actually has a backup battery, and came from the factory with everything set but the time zone, but I can manually change it if I want.

Apparently TGR needs to buy a clock that resets automatically.

It's in your settings. "automatically detect DST" I believe is the setting.

Why would it even be an option? Who would knowingly leave that unchecked?

Not every state observes DST let alone the world.

Arizona for one, because all the retired folks there could not figure out how to change the 'new' digital clocks and watches...

The US is pretty well covered with radio signals broadcasting the time in UCT. Your clock applies the time zone change (-7) and displays it to you.

I thought it had to do with GPS satellites (those atomic clocks) but that doesn't work without an antenna, so I guess iceman is right. But they probably get those broadcasts probably get their time from the USNO atomic clock that keeps GPS working.

And don't give me any of that "time is imaginary" bullshit. GPS position calculations have to take into account the fact that the satellites' time would appear moving slower from your frame of reference because of the vast speed difference between you and a satellite in orbit. It's called Relativity.
The best explanation for why they found particles that seemed to be measured going faster than light was that they forgot about that fact.

EDIT: Nope NIST sets "atomic" clocks. Doesn't really say how they keep their time.
Gonna have to do some more wikipedia ing
