Any ski town in USA
I am planning on moving to a ski town this winter. I have money saved and a years worth of income. I could afford around 1000 dollars rent per month. I am looking for a place that I can enjoy the outdoors year round.... Skiing, snowmobiling, kayaking, etc. I have lived on the east coast my entire life but have had enough of a taste of Colorado to know I want to give West coast living a shot.
On my short list is Tahoe city, Bozeman, and the butte. I want big powder dumps, a cool laid back town, a gnarly river to kayak and overall a place to call home. I am sure everyone has their idea of this utopia so I want to here them all. The good, the bad, and the ugly.
Thanks

Well, Bend, OR is pretty awesome all factors considered (please understand what this means before bunking the idea). It's got a lot of what you ask for and a pretty big (by ski town standards) fun town that is actually a tad bit more than JUST a "ski town".
Good luck on your search!

Doesn't matter where. Throw them all in a hat and pick one. You'll eventually get where you're supposed to be.

Will definitely check out OR but it seems too city for what I want. I usually end up enjoying myself no matter where I am (Appalachian trail currently).... But the snow in Killington does not meet my standards.

You should be able to find a place to crash in Bozeman for well under 1k/month. Two big mountains closeby and the gallatin to kayak.

If you have that much money saved, why don't you use it as a down payment on a house, rent out rooms and live like a ski bum off your room mate's rent?

If I were in your shoes I would go for Bozeman. It seems like a really neat place with great skiing nearby as well as paddling

Don't come to Crested Butte if you hope to eventually leave. Won't happen...

Try McCall Idaho.
Brundage Mountain has a respectable 400 inches of snow each year and the back-country is unlimited.
The nearby Payette River is a world class monster.
Plus, there's everything from Sand Dunes to huge canyons in Idaho.
Did I mention there's barely any people?

What about Driggs, ID? Targhee is right there. Teton pass is right there. Jackson is just over the pass. You have the Tetons on the East, Big Holes on the west, Sawtooths a little further west...It's a pretty relaxed small town with big mountains just outside your door. Worth consideration, IMO.

i'll chime in for tahoe city. great mountains with cheap interconnected passes way closer than bozeman is to bridger or big sky. the north fork is great for paddling although it's natural flow only. then you have the yuba, middle fork, and others. big dumps? umm, yeah.
being tahoe, it is all rather flat.powdork.com - new and improved, with 20% more dork.
