Whistler Stoke and Conditions - 2011/2012

Not that season 2010/2011 ever really ended, but Douglas and Callum Pettit skied pow on Blackcomb Glacier yesterday so I figured it's time to get this going.

ok, so pretty much your average marketing bs from the resort... -
yup, if i had a heli, i'd go ski pow right now too!
glacier this time of year with a foot of recent snow to hide all those crevasses. now theres a good idea... (sarcasm)_

but they wont let anyone hike up to the snowline and skin for it will they!

dont mind me, i'm just jealous

on that note, if there is anyone around whistler area who wants to meet up for some foot access hike to skin skiing in the next few days, let me know. i'm keen for early season turns on rock skis, and theres plenty of snow high enough. (outside the ski area boundary, obviously - i wont be poaching the liability lines in the resort...)

this will be the first year in the past 5 that I won't have a season pass, but I'll do my best to make it out as much as possible (minimum a few weekends and obviously gaper day). if any deep slabs occur around the area I'll be there in a heartbeat.. otherwise random weekends here and there, potentially looking for a couch to crash on.. let me know likewise if interested in rogers pass/revy

my whistler stoke addition for the year:

Just moved back to town, it's still biking season. But I'll probably have changed my mind in a couple of weeks.

As part of WB's agreement with BC Parks they HAVE to provide access.

The only way to access Blackcomb Glacier Park is via WB leased lands.
Blackcomb Glacier Provincial Park includes Ruby/Diamond bowls, Blackcomb Glacier. From there it runs in to Garibaldi Provincial Park.

If the forecast stays good I may go up later in the week.

So apparently you can ride the whis gondi up&down in summer operations with your ski/snowboard as long as you sign a backcountry release waiver and demonstrate your competency to patrol. Free if you have previous season's pass, and it was actually looking fairly good this weekend-but the bike park proved to be much more fun. Today was the last chance for that though

Heli skiing in Oct is not a bad life
I can't believe you are a rando racer because I look so much better in Lycra than you.

People who don't think the Earth is flat haven't skied Vail.

Bike Park was pretty amazing for closing weekend. Fun riding the bike down Una Moss in the snow. It looks like you could hike to get some goods today but for me the best part of October is dreaming of the winter, not destroying my skis on the glacier.

I saw one brave soul on Labour Day weekend hiking by Black Tusk with his skis.

+1 On a strong desire to get after some October glaciated fun. Unfortunately, the Bike Park stole most of my time this weekend so the early season goodness will have to last a few more days if I'm to get up there too... Hopefully it keeps being cold and wet through the weekend.

Shawn was talking about a Rainbow drop. Walking down from there would be better than hiking all the way up to the W/B alpine and then walking back down. I'd gladly pay $100 to kick off the 2012 renegade heli season!

oh yeah, a reliable source says most of the large crevasses in his tenure near Mt. Fee are all still bridged from last season, so that danger is probably not as high as it normally would be.

Is this common knowledge amongst the ticket guys? The few times I've tried to get tix for backcountry access to go climibing etc it's always 20 minutes of explaining that the tix I want does exist. Sometimes it's not really worth the effort. That was a few years ago now, though.

Mike what are you going to do when the usual WB peak cabin poachers show up? You won't be all along up there.
