As many of you know, Porter's finally went out of business in 2014:

What's the best alternative? Still loving Start Haus? What shop do you put your trust in for expert tuning? What about Granite Chief?

    Start Haus good, but expensive.

Slant skis between Alpine and Tahoe City does a great tuning job and they are reasonable.

GC is ok for tuning. I've never had them ruin a pair of skis. Had them mix up a pair with someone else's once but I got mine back. I assume the other guy did too. The most reasonable price for a basic tune (bases, edges, wax) in the Truckee area.

I haven't been in GC for years. Kinda stopped when they moved, but I never heard reasonable and GC in the same sentence before. Times have changed

Last two places I've had tunes from have been Smooth Rides and Skis and More. Both were reasonable, plus they usually keep "skier's hours" (open early, closed midday, open in evenings).

They're $20 or more cheaper than any other shop mentioned in this thread. Are the other places worth the extra money?--for a racer I assume so, for the likes of me no. The skis come back to me flat with a good structure, the edges aren't burred, and the skis don't do anything funky on the snow, which is what I require of a tune.

Well that’s pretty amazing if Gunnar is still doing that as he worked on my, (plug), boots 18 or so years ago.
