So, the skiing in Tahoe is mountain biking pretty well right now. Rode Incline Flume to Chimney yesterday, which (a) is depressing and (b) was a lot of fun.

I think this photo pretty much sums up the Tahoe ski season so far:

Frank, those are some killer photos!!!

But the skis season is not as good as those picture would suggest.

Hit Sugarbowl with low expectations this AM, especially since they stopped spinning Lincoln ...... but was pleasantly surprised. My own private Ski Resort!!! Weather was gorgeous, and the Jr. race course slot off Christmas tree (not roped off for grommet practice fortunately) provided enough speed and thrills to justify a second beer for lunch.

Vail corp about to file for bankruptcy??

Heard this rumor from a few different people this week, any one else hearing anything?

East peak lake apparently only has a couple of nights of snow making left before it runs dry. Someone told me today that there are trout in there, might be some easy pickings soon.

    Times are pretty grim...

where did you hear that? I have a hard time believing that since they are getting $100+ for a lift ticket and only the front side is open there.

those pictures above make me want to get on the mountain bike...depressing season.

Would be the shock of the year:

I wouldn't be surprised if Kirkwood has to file.

^^^why? They had a great year last year, and so far this year seem to be doing well with what they have. They don't have a whole bunch of lifts spinning and make snow for just four runs, and there have been a bunch of folks up in the valley. And the lodging looks busy. Food venues have had plenty of customers. What makes you think they are going to file?

That said, KW has been making the most of the meager conditions. Airbag, sledding hill, beginner area. Props to the team out here. Coop was even at the base of 6 on Thursday giving fair warning of the boilerplate at the top.

Now, if mother nature could just do her part, I think everyone is ready for ski season.

Just the rumor and news article last fall:

Thanks for the link. But it does say:

We are in a good financial state. We have no pressing needs. We had solid years back-to-back and almost no leverage on assets. We sold more real estate in the last two months than we have in the last two years
I know you can't trust what is in print, but is sounds like they are looking for a new partnership, not that that are about to go belly up.

Although, what I am interested in is:

will allow for expanding the ski area into the 1,100 acres of terrain it has a permit to use
Where is that 1100 acres? Anyone know? Does it include the Cirque? Spur? Emigrant? Red Cliffs?

My Northstar pass provided another great day during a shitty year. Super warm, corn groomers and the packed manmade on the sides was pretty fun. Pretty much perfect father/son ski training conditions, so I'm fully stoked.

Some dude on the chair at NS was saying that Squaw may close until they get more snow.

Heard it from no one reliable just random folks on the lift, even some kid on the race team said it to me.

I found it hard to believe also seeing that they took bids from like 7 helicopter company's to move snow in order to try to get the link from California to Nevada up, in the end it was to much, but does not sound like a company on the brink.

Just found it odd to hear it from a few different people today.

Andy Wirth sent an email to all employees specifically dispelling that rumor. Take that for what you will.

But there are a lot of rocks and brown patches around. It wouldn't surprise me to see some curtailing of operations if we don't get snow soon.

As 6er mentioned, Gnarthstar was muy mondo packed on the 31st, which was strange to me considering how the place cleared out on the 24th after 11.
The condis were a mixture of scraper and quicksand and I even encountered what I believe to be East Coast ice over on Washoe (I slid out on a patch of translucent green slickness that almost reflected my personage back at me).
Runs like Lower Pioneer got moguled out with the bumps being thick, quicksand patches surrounded by scraped off slickery doo; it got so crowded late afternoon that they placed 2 patrolers at the bottom section where the bumps started in an attempt to slow folks down (speaking of which, there were way too many folks out on runs way above their skill ability, which made the day interesting, as well).
Coolest thing is that the Shawn White Super Pipe was open to the public: it's a MONSTER.
Not a bad day, if you knew where to ski to avoid the crowds (The Face was holding the best snow and no crowds, but then you had to re-merge with the Pioneer craziness).
That said, it's getting thin, mostly due to the fact that they haven't been making snow for more than a week due to the high temps and intermittent rain.
Still, a sheisty day of skiing is better than a grand day in the office cubicle.

I was So close to getting the Epic pass... Bad decision to pass it by... It felt so strange to be telling chairmates that they should be elsewhere...
But I still had a fun time. Bella hated the fireworks. She would not make a gun dog.
Yesterday early the run from the top had good tooth. And hardly any traffic.

    Let it Snow!!!!!!!!!
Mom, we are sorry somebody called you a Bitch.

If ever there was a time to start a pool on when it's gonna snow, I guess now would be good. I'm going with Jan. 17.

    I've come close to crying.

The decision to buy an EPIC pass or SAT pass was a decision that I failed on. Went with the SAT pass. One of life's regrets.
