whisk(e)y to serve as a heirloom sort of thing

Ok. so we are expecting our first child in October and after reading an article on Grantland and maybe a post or two here (can't remember) I thought it would be a good idea to pick up a nice bottle of something on our son's birth and create some history with it, basically only break it out on his birthday or other big occasion and eventually pass on to him.

Was thinking a nice bottle of scotch or something since they tend to age well. I know I like glendfidditch and not really a fan of bourbons

other option is a Madeira or somethign but i don't know how well that would age.

Not looking to spent major bank, but want something that is decent

A nice bordeaux from his birth year would make a lovely wedding gift someday.

Can't go wrong with Lagavullan for the scotch.

Don't avoid bourbons. The Elijah Craig 18 is superb at about 65 bucks, and the Pappy Van winckles are even better, but much pricier.

Not a whiskey, but if I were to pick an heirloom, it'd be a bottle of Louis XIII cognac. I bought a bottle a couple years back. I never even liked cognac that much before, but when I drink Louis, I hear the angels sing. Freaking amazing stuff. It comes in a really nice and fancy clamshell case, has a beautiful hand-crafted crystal decanter that's actually worth several hundred dollars EMPTY, the stuff will last forever, and the bottle whether full or empty could be a true heirloom.

    From wikipedia...
"The cognac is manufactured using grapes from the Grande Champagne territory of Cognac, France. It is blended from 1200 eaux-de-vie, some more than a century in age, then it is aged in tiercons, oak barrels that are several hundred years old, in its own cellar."

I bought a bottle of Oban when my son was born - I had a glass then, I'll have another when he's 13, and I'll finish the bottle at his wedding. I had a friend design a small second label that I stuck on it...

My bad. In that case, you can't go wrong with a bottle of Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, or Macallan. (20 year?)

Does whiskey get better if it ages in the bottle? It's my understanding that the aging occurs in the casks and once it's bottled that's it.

So, in 20 years he could buy the same scotch.

A bottle of wine that is made to age that long would be a better idea, IMO. How the fuck you know it's going be cellar-able for that long is beyond me however.

    We have a winner.

Port probably a safer choice than wine - regarding the aging.

Yeah, but it's the thought that you are sharing a glass of whiskey that you bought on the day of his birth that is cool about this idea, not the taste of the whiskey. I wish I had thought of this at the time of my son's birth.

True. My dad bought a bottle of Dalwhinnie when my son was born. I'm looking forward to the time when all three of us can share it.

With the port you get the same experience plus something unique.

This is a cool idea. I'm not sure what "major bank" means to you, but if I were doing this, I would try to spend a mildly painful amount on the thing. Don't look back in 20 years and feel like you were cheap about it.
that's all i can think of, but i'm sure there's something else...

$100 for such a gift will get you a lot of options. I'd go with a vintage port, tawnys are my preference.

yea I think 100 is my max.

was tossing around the idea of picking up something to drink and also something to gift but that would probably stretch the budget too much

Pick up a bottle of Scotch now and in a couple years when the birth year Port is released pick up a bottle of that to have as well.

Nah, for $50 a pop you could get a good "cellaring" port and a great bottle of bourbon or scotch.

Not the same thing, but we boxed up the local news and LA Times the day each of our kids were born.

I wish I bought a bottle of Port, neither of my kids drink wine, so I would get to drink it all by myself.

Mistake as the whisky will lose flavour and character over the years once its been opened . Buy another bottle and keep it, drink the one you started

just convince your wife not to throw out her crazy, trendy clothes from the '90s and her partying years. let girly dress up in em around high school age and have fun looking silly in the throwbacks with her girlfriends. my friends whose parent's didn't throw out their 60's and early 70's clothes were the BEST!!! soooo much fun plus she can reminisce/bond with mom over it....

and, I'm sure any girlie of yours common is gonna be cool enuf to appreciate a nice whiskey by her later years anyways, so go ahead with the bottle as well!!
