Surgical plate/screw moved 3 months after surgery

Broke my collarbone in March. Had to get 7 screws and a plate in to fix it as it was badly broken and right near the shoulder joint.

Was going great, rehab/physio guy was very impressed at my progress, got clearance for the the gym. Was doing dumbbell bent over rows with 25 lbs (1 week ago). Felt something give in my shoulder, not much pain just really weird. Got home and my plate or a screw was sticking out and a new bone is now showing. It feels like the entire bone shifted a bit and the plate is in a new position.

I got some xrays the next day and the doctor said that they look ok. Problem is now that I don't think I will be able to wear a pack with how rough my shoulder is, lots of discomfort and pain, it feels like the alignment is all out of whack now. Lots of constant pain in the joint, where the screw/plate is sticking out hurts a lot as well.

Is this something that would require more surgery? Any tips for pleading my case with the surgeon?

Super bummed, no wakeboarding this summer.......

yeah, but I did get the go ahead from my physio to start hitting the gym. Obviously it was a little too much........ Just hope that they can do something because the way it is right now is no good.

Maybe a simple surgery to fix the screw/plate that is now trying to push its way out of my skin?

ask if the plate can be taken out?

sometimes the plate is integral to the joint forever, but it could have just been an internal fixation while the bone set and now it superfluous...

I talked about it with my physio and he said sometimes the bone will reject and push out the screws like your skin does with a sliver. seeing the surgeon on monday. hopefully he can fix me up. it is only getting worse.

Finally got into see the shoulder specialist after my physio saw the new damage he was like wtf? I am not touching that. You need a second opinion.

Shoulder doc basically threw the original surgeon under the bus, saying he screwed up big time, the plate should have been much longer as their was a large piece of bone that never got set and that was what moved. The original doc (locum, young guy, he is now out of town) was looking at the same x-rays. You can see the piece that moved pretty easy.

Now waiting for ct scan as the new doc says the bone is way out of alignment and may need to be re-broken and set. It now feels like the bones have grown back together but are way out of alignment, not getting much pain from the break but now it is the surrounding soft tissue and bones.

Anyone have a clue what the process is here? I just want them to get me ready for winter. I think I will be facing a decision whether or not to go ahead and get it re-broken.

Big problem with plates and screws in foot

I had midfoot fusion two months ago. My foot is absolutely killing me and I am going to beg the doctor to remove them. I can barely walk.
has anyone else had this problem especially so soon? Did you remove it!
    Thank you.

pum'kin -- You are nowhere near healed -- "midfoot fusion" : ( sheet ) You Should be non-weight bearing until you are Pain free for eight weeks...
my fracture was Painful for four months ( I am old ) .

midfoot fusion. your foot is not ever going to be (right) again. Your Goal (now) is Pain free. …
my Opinion is get the fusion assessed : is it stable(,) or is it breaking down (?) it needs to be stable, and then you've got to let it heal ( get one of those rollers, and STOP trying to walk on it )
( my (x-rays) at eight months ( Months ) show " minimum evidence of healing " but it has not been painful for four months. so I am taking it easy ; Walk ice free terrain ( I hate treadmills, but. . . ) and I will get it reassessed in at least another six months...
Surgery would be two surgeries and three years. Patience is (Very) important .

    Patience is very important. …

    Good luck. tj
