TR: MayCember: Dog - Shit and The Citadel

    FRIDAY, MAYcember 13th, 2011

May has been incredible in Colorado, so after a recent dumping of snow I headed up to Loveland Pass area this past Friday to ski a few lines I've been staring at for a couple of years.

I met up with John and Alexandra at 6AM and we began skinning up above the gully behind the CDOT shed.

It felt like winter in the Alpine with new snow, blue sky, and a gripping wind

About halfway up the ridge we encountered a bulletproof snowpack, and switched from skinning to booting.

We gained the ridge had a snack and began the precarious 4th class scramble over to Shit For Brains.

Despite the allure of a spicy exploration over to Shit For Brains, I decided to hit the rather plump looking Dog-Leg Couloir. (seen on left)

After a series of ski cuts, I dropped in and smiled, our early start had paid off and I was rewarded with face shot after face shot of cold dry powder. I cut hard left at the Apron and proceeded up the bootpack of SFB to a safe zone.

John ripping a turn in the gut of SFB

    This shot says it all

    The damage done

A look at the two lines. Dog leg is on the left, SFB on the right

We ended an amazing day with some sidecountry fun. ME

    The Citadel

Up before the sun to explore a beautiful Colorado 13'er with a solid crew. We dropped a car at Herman and proceeded to skin briefly along I-70.

Working our way up and out of Dry Gulch

After gaining the ridge we paused for a look back. NO WIND and blue sky that was quickly giving way to another storm....GODDAMN Colorado is beautiful

    A view of the objective

After a quick lunch we headed up the collar

    John leads the way

The snow was perfect for booting

Admired that line when we skied Snoopy.
I can't believe you are a rando racer because I look so much better in Lycra than you.

People who don't think the Earth is flat haven't skied Vail.

MAYCEMBER is looking solid this year, hoping the epic Winter just keeps on rolling through the Summer this year. Just when you thought it was over, it just reels us back in. Great line on Citadel Saturday, finally checked it off the list. Only gets better this weekend with some legit MayCember POW days.
