    South America | 2011

With the first dusting of snow in Las Leñas I thought it might be a good idea to get the 2011 South American Ski Thread going. Hope to see you all down south this summer!

Heading down south with my best friend in late July We should be hitting Peru for a week, then off to ride in Chile for a week and then surf in Costa Rica as part of our world domination tour for the last six days. Would be sick to meet up down there.

What impact, if any, does La Nina have on South American snowfall? does it favor one region over another?

La nina was confused this year just ask Mammoth. Hope the same for south of the border! Pics please.

Maybe . . . if I win the powerball or get adopted by Daddy Warbucks! Always nice to dream.

If you are headed to Bariloche and require lodging, we offer a maggot discount. Just mention Hugh Conway at the time of booking.

Las Leñas at least is plenty sensitive to La Niña/El Niño, and the former isn't good there generally (see: last year)

I’ll be back! Summer number 3 in a row. July to Sept. Winter simply will not end.

    Bariloche, or elsewhere?

Yeah yeah rub it in. :P

I would definitely like to get back to Bariloche at some point, but I'm really interested in checking out LL or some spots in Chile. Here's to hoping its a better season for both places.

Does Chile suffer from the "A-factor" (or should we call it 'C-Factor')?

    the nina

I can confirm that Las Lenas and the Santiago places were mighty thin last summer and Portillo was pretty much unskiable last July. Confirms the analysis on bestnow.net. Heard that Chillan was fine though and bestnow.net doesn't have snowfall stats on Chillan. Can someone give a rundown of the snowfall in Chillan last summer? Maybe further South is the way to go if La Nina sticks around.

Not good for Portillo and Las Lenas. Your best bet is to head further south. For the Santiago resorts, you need El Nino like in 2009 for this:

Lookin at making the trip south. What is everyones experience with flights? is there a better airport to fly out of the U.S. from? any specific city in south america usually have cheaper rates? a first look at tickets from Denver is lookin at $1500+ into buenos aires. es no bueno, demasiado dinero……..

Here's a post that might be helpful for those trying to decide between Argentine locations.

    Las Leñas versus Cerro Catedral
