so...
piedmont governor declared today that this has been the biggest dump of the last century. There are many reports of 4.5 meters of fallen snow above 2500 mt.
The roads to alagna and macugnaga have been closed for long time, and macugnaga seems to be still unreachable.
I was seriously tempted to drive ticino tomorrow, but according to meteosuisse there is an high risk of very strong winds from the north (which will be hammered again in the next days)

the more east, the colder it will stay...
concerning the dump: this century or in the last 100 years
i'l say at least in the 10-20 year range this must be most snow in piedmont. not only storm totals, but all time snow levels.....Last edited by subtle plague; 12-17-2008 at 09:48 AM.

piedmont today (limone and prato nevoso, thanks missing madaci):
regarding 100 yrs vs this current century.... really dunno what the governor meant, I have no access to data (and maybe data from 1908 or so are not available), I just further read that something vaguely comparable (in terms of snow fall intensity in a week) happened in december 1960 and no more later
