Heading to St. Anton at the end of the month (Jan. 25-27th). Wife has a work thing in Munich. Trying to figure out whether we should hire a guide for one of those days. She's a decent skier, but doesn't have too much experience with any sort of non-groomed snow. Would hiring guide for for us both make sense? Any recommendations? We could also just do separate lessons. I've heard that the instructors will take you into some fun terrain. I'm bringing my avy gear, but if I'm skiing solo I'm not going to venture too far off on my own.

Also, how are the rentals in St. Anton? We've got a few train transfers on the way to and from Munich and there's some concern that having a ski bag to wheel around might be a bit of a pain.

With http://arlberg-guides.at/ based near the Gampen lift, they first ask to sort yourself, then do an evaluation run before heading out. Best deal I found there. They successively discount each day one returns.

St. Anton has lots of rentals but is not inexpensive.

@mulletizer, fyi, zermatt yosimite ski shop was recommended by a zermatt local for all things backcountry and gear. may have boot fitters. the place looked well equipped.


had a good early season trip to euro to get into ski shape. going to have to look into to doing some training out there. that simplon pass above brig swiss had a ton of snow, great access, and expansive touring options. looks tremendous. what an area to live by. best drive up and ski tour location i have seen.


courmayer and mote rosa stafal has great early season coverage bottom to top and off piste would be gtg on a powder day, especially monte rosa stafal. be a good year to hit the aosta valley up.


zermatt and cervinia high piste held very well 7 days after last snow with seemingly mild temps.
could not believe how well sunbaked cervinia piste held up. super fun piste and chill vibe over there.

perferred cervinia if the sun was out and zermatt if it is was not sunny.
favorite piste run was hitting the 8:00 zermatt gornergrat train for the top rope drop up top for the fresh groomers, then roll over to cervinia.


cervnia off piste seems much more manageable for an alps rookie if one were to just show up on a powder day. monte rosa staffal as well. some of that zermatt stuff, not so much, expertise warranted.


some off piste zermatt is super rocky and extreme shark country. coverage was good but needs a big dump and the snow to not blow away. got reined in quick as fresh tracks were met with rocks. softest snow found was the ridge bailing off into trees to the rifflerapp train stop, but then one had to wait for the train.


zermatt is a super impressive ski resort with little to no queuing on even the busiest days if the whole mountain is open. definitely more bang for the buck than top us resorts. swiss and italians were all super friendly.

Depends if it snows. If it has snowed in the last 4 to 5 days and you want to sniff out some pow I would get a guide. They will find some decent fluff. If it hasn't snowed, then I wouldn't bother. Just explore on your own.

Jenewein has great skis for rent. Don't know prices, but it's one of the few that has a wide assortment of fat skis in the Alps. Martin is a great guy as well.

If you're asking, the answer is almost always rent. Unless you score that early morning or late night transfer through Salzberg, just bring your boots (or not) and rent everything in St. A. Imo, make the travel fun, decrease the transfer stress, have a beer en route and rent. If they gouge you, go somewhere cheaper next season.

Went touring today from Klosters after being States-side for the past three weeks. I was pleasantly surprised by the snow quality. Not saying it was excellent, but much better than I expected.

Found surprisingly good snow today all over G3k. Mostly smooth, fast, firm compact pow. Ice where it's been blown off.
