The snow will come.. late season. Because I booked my 5 weeks from 20.2 onwards Nah, shitty situation really. Bad for everybody, but kinda eases my pain of waiting at least slightly as i chose ages ago to go rockclimbing over xmas..

Looking for touring/riding partners in Chamonix for the aforementioned 5 weeks. I'm not really familiar with cham, I´ve been there twice, like 20 and almost 10 years ago with a mellow group. This time with a slightly different mindset.. I´m on a HB splitboard setup.

I hasten to mention that he is named after Baldric from Season 1, when he was the cleverest of the bunch

Today's mission: 1850m of ascent to ski the Glacier de Tre-les-eaux. A stellar day.

^ Sorry dude, only just saw this, it's a lie-in morning today! Hope the ski test goes well.

The Glacier de Tre-les-Eaux is off the shady side of Mont Buet, underneath the north face (which still looks far too dry to even think about skiing). Long slog to get up there, and then after the skiing there's more climbing, a bit of via ferrata, some full-on forest combat, and finally a long walk to get home again, with the snowline being as high as it is. Later on in the year, once the river gully at the bottom of the valley has properly filled in (inshallah), it's a straight ski home.

Listen, guys, I hate to spam the boards like this, but... are any of you even going skiing? I know there's a lot of rocks and pine needles and frowns around, but... come on. Go and ski that gravel.

Despite the, frankly, astounding lack of snow so far this season, I've tried to get as much ski touring done over the last few days as possible, in an effort to get tour-fit for later in the season. As some of you might have noticed, I sometimes like to scribble down a few sentences about the time I get to spend in the mountains, but recently I just haven't felt inspired to stretch these long days into even longer stories. I hope to get going again with that whole thing as soon as time, snow, and skiing allows.

In the meantime, I seem to have accidentally made a short video-documentary about skiing, waiting, and the transition between autumn and winter. Please enjoy these moving pictures and rocking cello music.

    No.

Nearest snow about 800km away so I am slurking up your stoke, so stfu and keep on working on your buns!

And damn the forecasts look grim. Initially had plans to do a few week sting down to the pyrenees ( or alps) but now...no way.
10 day forecast shows basically nothing to pyrenees and very little to the alps.
Luckily the south norway seems to get some pounding, but it is still unclear at what level the isotherme 0c will be.

But, seriously? I have been skiing the alps in the Christmas time for the last 15 years or so, but never, ever have I seen this kind of conditions.
Serius Wtf from here. Usually there have been some corner, somewhere, that have had snow..but now? Jeebus.
Checked some longer GFS (and others) forecasts and no hope in sight. Grim.

The floggings will continue until morale improves.

It was a cold and rocky start to the season.

My skis, neglected with the worst of ennui lay rusting and dull.

In feeble attempts to assuage my listless torpor, I poked repeatedly at a wide variety of ski or snow related chatboreds, weather forecast websites and gerbil porn darkweb nodes. I got very tired of the droll rattlings of "freshies", "stoke" and vaguely shadowed marketing dickwaves between the bits.

Then it began to snow, mixed at first with rain, fog, freshets, sleet and ill humor as a career in bitshoveling ground down to political shoving matches regarding whether I would be put on the phone to customers. I refused unless management conceded to provide a paper wedge hat and condone my intent to request if the clients wanted their cloudfeed supersized.

Now the fronts seem to have turned coming in cold, dropping snow and the glory of pow daze returns. w000t.

Yes, but I would prefer not to talk about it. Bear in mind our mountains end about 1000m under yours.

I blame the scientoligists that have been digging all of the holes in the glaciers and letting the cold air out.

Haa, I feel your pain, and I'm sure things will improve soon enough, but that is an awesome photo. Crazy contrast.

Baldric's new belay jacket. He's fine on both the uphill and the downhill, whatever the weather, but I thought it would be a good idea for him to wrap up warm during the transition and tea-drinking stages.

1750 of up, 800ish of decent down, and another 900+ of purest combat hell. At least the views are good.

So after yet another trip up Mont Buet, I've done about 8500m of ascent in the last twelve days, but now I'm putting the skins and skis away for a while and replacing them with roast goose, fruit cake, and hot whisky, as I am visiting family in the UK and Ireland for Christmas and New Year. Merry Christmas, one and all.

Long time lurker, first time poster.....

Heading to Zurich for work first week of Jan. Looking to get a few days skiing after. How's Engelberg looking this time of year? Or should I just jump on a train to Cham?

engelberg is th only place in the Alps with a "decent" base. meaning 50cm at 2000m
If it ever snows again. it would be the place to ski. Unftunately there is nothing in the pipepline until early january.

In that case, allow me to rephrase my question...

Are there any good titty bars in Zurich or Engelberg?

Smart move. Looks good too. Going to have to modify Wilma's jacket, because she keeps shoveling snow down the front of it. Kind of destroys the warming effect of that thing

    Edit: Current mood:

Things weren't so bad last weekend on the Swiss side (Val d'Arpette). Not the best snow I've ever been on, but at least it's stable enough to ride some steeps. Report here.

Let's see what this weekend brings. At least it will be sunny.
