Engelberg is bigger and more developed than Andermatt. More expensive too. More hotels, bars and cachet. The sidecountry around E-berg is big, scary and more consequential than Andermatt. All things considered between the number of lifts and resources, it's probably "better" than Andermatt. The Laub is amazing, as are the glacier runs and all the great lines off the Jochstock/Jochpass.

Andermatt means a lot of things though. Typically, it's the Gemsstock tram that's the crown and standard bearer. You can ski any direction off the top of the Gemsstock without ropes and with only a decent sense of ski savvy. There's definAtely cliffs and scary shit, but nowhere near what the backside of the Titlis at Engelberg has. But Andermatt has the whole sunny Natschen side that connects to a series of fun lifts leading over to Sedrun, so it's more spread out over sunny groomers with interesting sidecountry. Disentis is it's own whole universe with a lot of just sweet, steep sidecountry.

I have a preference for Andermatt/Disentis. probably mostly because I remember it when it was a Swiss military training site and kind of a third order dump that was cheap and got a lot of snow. No pretty social climbers like at other more important locales. Plus, you should go hang out with vendul who's a font of good skiing and abundance.

Interesting forecast. Good until Wednesday. Then loads of warm precip (rain 2000+) and maybe good next weekend.
Mountains above 2500m ( yeah I know.... but it's basically april considering climste change) should get back to average or above.

This winter is arduous, but at least something is happening again in March.

Ullr really didn't make it easy for us this year. Little snow, heat weak layers and so on. But spring is about to become at least halfway usable. Again a dump in March, which can be seen and this time also brings snow to everyone, whereby the question is whether and where there is still a base at low altitudes and in the east of the Alpe. Exciting it continues, so that the weekend afterwards does not look so wrong, but more about that below.

    Alert period and areas
The alarm goes from Sunday to Tuesday. In the west until the early morning in the east until the afternoon.

It applies to the entire northern arc of the Alps from northern France to the Dachstein.

    Display
    Anzeige
    Wind
Will only be stormy briefly on Sunday, but the main precipitation on Monday should be quite useful at altitude. So theoretically it doesn't go that far into Valais or even behind the main ridge. Full quantities in the north traffic jam.

    Snow line
On Sunday at 1300-1700m with the higher values in France. Just in time for the onset of the real traffic jam it goes but almost completely down, so that from 1000m also properly something should come. Full quantities but only from 1500-1800m. But since it ends with the coldest phase, Tuesday morning should at least attract the powder.

    The quantities
From France to the Dachstein come 40-60cm of snow, in traffic jams (Central Switzerland, Arlberg, Nordkette, Dachstein etc.) it will be 60-80cm and 1m I can imagine somewhere, because it will be a real traffic jam.

    Display
    Where should I go?
Near This is very difficult on Sunday because not much happens during the day. Monday I would rather head west to a high area with trees, which still had base, but which will not be easy even in France and Valais. In any case, not too deep inner-alpine, but in traffic jams. Everyone else should take alpine meadows and lanes, because it will not tear open. Tuesday the sun beckons and it gets dangerous at the top, but probably also pretty good.

    Medium term
Wednesday to Friday it will be warm and from Thursday probably also wet, which should not allow nice tours because of the ungrateful combination. From Friday, according to the crystal ball of the oracle, it should remain wet, but possibly get cooler again, so that this year the Weekendwarrior do not have so much less powder days than the students and trustafarians, but only because there is simply little overall.

    Powder to the people!

Your oracle looking forward to his second Powder Tuesday this year.

Today was ok. Ok who am I kidding? Best day of the season.
Deep, but a bit sketchy in Engelberg. Huge avie on the steinberg took someone for a ride. Bruised but ok apparently.

Still.... very little wind up high. 50-80 of fresh. The top 20-30 were blower. On a soft base. Hero snow.
Pic 1 avie. How is the guy 5m left of the thing feeling?
Other pics: we had some fun. I've managed the triple today. First at stand, first on jockstock and first on steinberg. We had a bit of fun.

Very nice day in the Arlberg today. Deep stuff. Large avalanche in about the worst place possible over on the Rendl. Anyone know if the skier/skiers lived?

    True dat.

The Gemsstock was going off yesterday, and we got untouched tracks in Val d’Acletta in Disentis. Unbelievably good, similar 50-80 cm of pow.
