Some fucking massive slides the last couple of days. 2 dead in Carinthia, one of them that girl. Reports are now saying 16 years old, was skiing with her family. 10 year old sister also caught but not buried.

Things are pretty tricky at the moment. When accident under Konigstuhl happened, I was just minutes away on opposite hill (Seenock and Sauereggnock), but unfortunately on other side so I didn't see anything until I came home and read about accident. But whole north face of Konigstuhl slided earlier already, so you could see stuff is not really stable. Report says face went down probably day or two earlier, but looking from opposite hill, and considering some new snow less then 24h before, it didn't look for me as slide was more then half day (after last snow) old. On Sauereggnock snow was stable (on E and W slope), but there's was a lot of winds and a lot of snow drift, so conditions were anything but easy. Yet we still managed to meet one guy who obviously managed to walk from Innerkrems ski place without any equipment at all. Just alpine skis, no backpack, no beacon no nothing. He was lucky and nothing happened, while guy on the other side under Konigstuhl unfortunately didn't have such luck.

So what's the going rate for a guide in the EU? If you are solo what are the options to join a group?

In Switzerland a guide takes 600 CHF per day and group size is usually limited to 6, max. 7...

I reckon it's the best time to be there of this season in the Euro.

I'm in Les 2 Alpes for work right now, and I'm pretty sure, there were better times to be here this season. Haven't seen the other side (aka La Grave) yet, but if it's anything like here (and I guess it is), then conditions will be far from epic. Still possible to have a fun day out though, so all the best.

Apparently three people died (one more still missing) today at one of my favourite touring mountains. I'm actually kind of glad I can't really ski at the moment. haven't been to Schmirn in a long time but it's so nice when it's good (like that day when we ran into each other ages ago). kind of sends shivers down my spine seeing this go so big, not that it's the first time..

Yeah, they are saying the fourth body was 12m (!!!) down. A local guy was there on the same day and did two laps with no issue just before the group went down. I've skied that plenty of time on days with "moderate" danger, close to home..

wow, rare luck there was one here a couple of months ago where dog found the victim alive after 30 minutes. some series of lucky coincidences made it possible for the dog & handler to get there so quickly. the handler/dog team seemed very happy to find a live person for once.
