and 2Funky.
we've been to the black forest. The quarantine rule makes it hard to go to switzerland. Which im not sad about right now. Condistions are sketchy as fuck. It's a war of the mind and we're armed to the teeth.

I've read it. One dead? Edit: oh I saw the other one as well.
But how the fuck did the attelas avie bury 10 people? I mean I probably know how. That's why don't like verbier or Engelberg on a frenzy day. People skiing on top of each other... Brrr.
Vibes to you guys. It's a war of the mind and we're armed to the teeth.

And a third in Montreux. 19 year old local kid.
5 deaths in 3 days. But that was bound to happen with all those deep instabilities.
I'm only half sad that I'm stuck in the black forest this year. It's a war of the mind and we're armed to the teeth.

Bizarre story. Another British (ski instructor) breaks into alpine club Hut to stay there, causes 5 figure damage and dies because he suffocates due to co poisoning. All huts that aren't open in winter have their exhaust pipe removed. And no it wasn't an emergency. The winter room was open. And he had 2 suitcases with him.

The green line is the route into rocknroll couloir. The red area is where the slab triggered and came over the cliff into the couloir and onto the skiers below. A lot of snow at high velocity - You can see it went a long way. The blue line is the much more rarely skied XV couloir. There are 3 fast tracks coming out of it, possibly the pros who were out that morning. Maybe the person who triggered it followed their tracks onto the slab face with a less fluid style. Who knows... There are some very good (and knowledgeable) riders like Jeremie Heitz regularly skiing these couloirs - he was on the first lift yesterday. The problem is that everyone can see them from the lift and then think it’s safe.

I can imagine 2 or 3 small groups getting together and heading around there together. I guess people heading lookers right along the ridge could have triggered it too without knowing (in the best case) people were in the couloir Below
Sad thing is the name, Rock & Roll, is actually a clue to what can happen if it goes wrong. (Bob's Instagram too)
Edit - seems to be getting more and common that people skiing on the flatter apron are getting hit by avalanches set off by people in the colours or on the ridge. We discussed one here this time last year
Conflicted feelings about not being out this season at the moment...

Day 3 for the 2020/21 Winter Season in the Brecon Beacons National Park
After following the forecast Chris (@chrismorrismighty) & I headed to the Central Beacons Massif at lunchtime hoping for clear skies and a colourful sunset
Unfortunately it wasn’t to be, with the only visibility on the walk up from Pont-ar-daf car park
Yours truly skiing the Cefn Crew slopes as far as they'll go

WEDNESDAY 09 DECEMBER 2020
Day 5 for the 2020/21 Winter Season in the Brecon Beacons National Park
Calm & clear in the pre-Dawn light but then the mist rolled in and bedded in for the morning with just the odd spotlight of sun penetrating the gloom
And always where I wasn’t
But every cloud has a silver lining, and mine was bumping in to photographer Darren Thomas (@darren_thomas_photography) on top of Pen-y-Fan
Absolute pleasure to meet him, his shot of me waiting for the light is the fourth in this series
Take a look at his body of work, it’s tremendous
The turns were great though

MONDAY 28 DECEMBER 2020
Day 6 for the 2020/21 Winter Season in the Brecon Beacons National Park
Calm & clear in the pre-Dawn light but then the mist appeared and settled in for the day
Bumped in to Nerys’ nephews Will (@w11byn) and Greg (@gregbeynon) on the way up and then skied with Chris (@chrismorrismighty) and gave a lesson on how to manage the Beacons snow and terrain to Jess (@jessp7890)
Great effort from Jess on her first day skiing in the Beacons, and only her second day on skis
The turns were great though, all the way back to the bridge

Day 7 for the 2020/21 Winter Season in the Brecon Beacons National Park
Grey skies but good visibility across the Western edge of the Brecon Beacons
Great turns with Chris (@chrismorrismighty) including a very nice descent of Fan Foel above Llyn Y Fan Fawr

SATURDAY 02 JANUARY 2021
Day 8 for the 2020/21 Winter Season in the Brecon Beacons National Park
Arguably the most beautiful sunrise I’ve experienced in the Brecon Beacons National Park
The sky was alive with colour
There wasn’t a breath of wind
And the rising sun warmed the snowy slopes in a perfect alpenglow
Onwards and upwards
Images here
https://www.instagram.com/p/CJ-fbuID4Qc/
But what a difference a couple of hours can make
I set off from the Llyn y Fan Fach car park in Llanddeusant around 6am to catch sunrise coming up over Fan Foel and then make ‘golden hour’ turns on the snow covered slope
I was in position, waiting for Chris (@chrismorrismighty) to launch the drone, when the skies darkened; we lost the light; and big, dry flakes started tumbling out of the sky
After consulting the radar map we could see the next front was rolling in quicker, earlier, and with more force than forecast
So it was combat skiing in low light back to the car to avoid getting stuck in the Llanddeusant valley
There was close to 5cm on the car and road when I set off for home with many not heeding my warning to turn around
The uphill sections had traction, but on the downhill I was freewheeling in neutral, handbrake on, steering with and against the slide to avoid the ditch and hedgerows
Any touch of the brake would send the car skidding
Those who left after me were stuck and/or had slid off the road, and it was a long wait for the local farmers to pull them out
Although the Western Brecon Beacons is on the doorstep of ‘civilisation’, when the weather turns it becomes wilderness very, very quickly

TUESDAY 05 JANUARY 2021
ICE STATION BRYCHEINIOG
Day 9 for the 2020/21 Winter Season in the Brecon Beacons National Park
Chris (@chrismorrismighty) & I met up with photographer and YouTube vlogger Gareth Danks (@gareth_danks) for what we were all hoping would be another spectacular sunrise, and great sunlit turns off Fan Foel
It started off well but as soon as we got to lake level the visibility became like being on the inside of a golf ball!
We waited out the storm at ‘Bar Brycheiniog’ (images 2, 3 & 4) but with no end in sight to the biting winds (-10 C at best) we skied back to the car following the path
Rocky but manageable

Gareth’s Instagram account (@gareth_danks) has loads of tremendous photography

Fan Foel is teasing us
Maybe next time
