They are "semi static" (or semi dynamic, depending on which way you look at it), about 7.9, I think. A pair of them will see you through most of the standard things in Chamonix, occasionally you'll need to break out something longer and stronger though. Why do you ask?

I'm in the market for a short ski rope for similar conditions. Petzl sells a static rope which is 6mm and very light. Just makes me nervous bringing a static cord into the mountains even though people who lots more experience use it all the time. I would just like the option to climb with it if there was ever an emergency. A friend sort of settled that argument by asking if I was preparing to bring my rack with me for such an event. Of course I'm not so the need for dynamic ropes is moot.
Can you take a lead fall on yours?

Well sure, you CAN take a fall, and it'd hurt like hell unless your belayer is good with a more dynamic belay technique (running the rope slowly over a shoulder instead of biting it instantly with an ATC), but if it's an emergency then I think that option beats the alternative of staying in an emergency...
To be honest, the only lead fall I'd expect my glacier rope to take would be when crossing a suspect bergschrund, where the rope would already be a little tight over my partner's shoulder, and they'd be able to slide out a little slack to arrest the fall gently; or to safeguard against an unforeseen catastrophe on the kind of terrain that you'd be happy solo climbing on... easy ridge scrambling, short rocky steps, easy-angled short pitches of ice... if you expect to be doing anything harder than what you're 99% certain you won't fall on, then it's time to bring a dynamic rope. I have a pair of 60m and a pair of 25m, both 8.5mm or so, for days like that.
Also, I generally do bring a small handful of nuts, a couple of slings, and a good length of anchor tat as a bare minimum rack. It just lives in my sack with the rope.
The Petzl 6mm is great weight-wise, but a line that skinny is harder to use, and needs more specialised kit and techniques to use safely. Unless we are really trying to shave the grams off the kit list, I'd rather bring my 7.9mm instead of my friend's 6mm.

Assuming snow to low levels this week is Vichères in the Pays du St Bernard area a good shout for a Bruson alternative? Any of the other smaller places worth a look?

Skiing Engelberg Friday and Saturday. Going as part of a guided group on Saturday but would be totally interested in meeting up with any Mags in Friday. Any of you out that way?

Yes, it was a good day..... but unfortunately not epic due to the debris.
On the way up we were thinking of heading down the Val Piana and I was pretty excited. But at the end we went down Cavagnolo, since there was a bit too much snow pile up in the Piana for my taste.

Arriving to Via Lattea / sestriere on sunday.
How's the snow? What website is good for weather?
Also, if anybody got some beta on the ganja situation I'd be stoked.
Cheers!Last edited by the_teo; 01-17-2018 at 01:51 PM.

Really weird storm..
I nearly drove west... Wasn't convinced and ski good snow behind the main alpine ridge in the south right now.

Flying into Geneva tomorrow and heading to Chamonix most likely. Looking for recommendations on where to snowboard. I will be solo and looking to ride some chairlifts, what area are the best? I know people rave about Verbier, should I book lodging in Verbier or Chamonix? Expert snowboarder, will have avi kit, ice axe, and crampons if need be. Let me know your thoughts.

Alpybus is simpler if you intend to just stay in the valley, but having a car will let you get to Courmayeur and Val d'Aosta if conditions are better over there.
The storm looks set to clear on Monday night so you should get some good sunny days after that, but temperatures are set to sky rocket early next week... with the zero isotherme up at 3000 again!Short stories about snow and rock, and pictures, too
