Sorry jon, I dont' agree with your math. You mixed pre and post tax numbers and I don't think 56% productivity (90/160) is right.

(80,000/(1-.45))/500 = 291 billable hours.

Assume 80% utilization, so billing 8 out of every 10 hours worked. 290/.80 = 364 hours.

Assume 60 hour workweek = 6 weeks of work if you don't buy food, pay rent, pay for gas, electricity in your cardboard box, blah blah blah.


Or you can do it this way:

assume well paid lawyers make 250,000 pre tax. That's 250,000(1-.45) = 137,500 after tax. 80/137.5 = 60% = 7.2 months to pay for this thing.

I have never really understood the value/ appeal of these things. The fit and finish looks good, but it seems to me a badass f-350 and a top of the line cabover does the same thing at half the price. Having it all in one piece probably helps with the off road capacity, but you could always go with a four wheel camper or other pop up. Cool, but not a good value from what I can tell.
Sportsmobiles are the same story. Usually way overpriced. I waited 10 years to finally get one for what I thought it was worth. Of course, when it's time to sell it is definitely worth top dollar.

The pilots number is probably skewed by the most senior pilots who fly big planes in internation trips.

The lawyer number is definitely skewed by the partners at big firms in NY, DC, LA and a few other cities. There are a sizeable number of them and they make close to a million or more per year. But the vast majority don't make anywhere near that much.

I'm a lawyer. I'm not claiming poverty or anything, but I work pretty hard in a lot of difficult situations and don't make that much. It's a fine living, but I don't think lawyers should be cited as the proverbial rich guys who can afford anything that suits their fancy.

Anyway, if you look at the avg lawyer salary in that chart (which I think is skewed high), the number is $124k before taxes. So, the avg makes about $75k after taxes. That does not get one the earthroamer, unfortunately.

Actually, math isn't my area of expertise. That's why I went to lawschool. (And no, I don't do tax law either). Someone making $124k would bring home what, $88k or so per year? Still doesn't get the earthroamer, unless you live in it. That gives me an idea . . .
