Henry's below Ashton - The end is here? The long feared drawdown of Ashton Reservoir has begun. I saw a photo posted on Westfly showing very muddy water coming through the new bypass tunnel.
Fall River - had a fun float from the power plant to the highway. Lots of small bows and some brookies. It seems to have been worked over with hopper patterns so the larger fish are sulking in the fast deep spots. The nymph droppers outfished the hoppers 10 to 1.
Teton - Had my best big fish day of the season. We saw river otters and my fishing partner swears he saw a little bear. Dry fly sucked. I worked a 1000 foot section and got no inspections on the hopper. Came back up it at sunset working a #6 black BH RL bugger along the bottom under an indicator and in 45 minutes got 10 hookups on big fish and landed 8. All bows: a 20", 3 at 18", and 4 at 15-17". Saw a few decent fish rising to caddis after it was too dark to fish. Pmds absent, again. Dry fly is overrated.Last edited by neckdeep; 08-23-2011 at 10:38 AM.

Still taking large fish on dries over here. Another few days and I'd imagine it will go the other way until fall hatches begin.
LOTS of Bears, tracks and shit up the Buffalo Fork! No sightings or fresh tracks/scat in the Par though.

I only took a few casts today. The old man, however, had some better luck.

Jackson mags - How is the Snake in GTNP fishing right now? Any stretches fishing better than others? Is the airport channel sketch this year?
-

The Snake is fishing well, (2nd hand). I'm a little embarrassed but don't know what's up with the airport channel. I will find out and get back. The dam down to Wilson has been the most productive but I'd bet the lower river starts to turn on in the canyon for streamers/nymphing soon. Pritchard to West Table should be getting good for fall too. Flows are expected to stay in summer mode for a while and possibly even bump up, (bummer!).
Lemme know when you're coming through.

Thanks schwerty. Flying in early this coming Sunday and heading to straight to the water from the airport. Out on the last flight Tuesday so 3 days on the river. Planning on two days in the GTNP area given the proximity to the airport (Pacific-Deadman's or Deadman's-Moose). Given the warm sunny forecast, I'm hoping big bugs will be working well.
BTW, which fly won the onefly tourney this year?

ahhhh another bad ass way to end the month of September! I know the foul-weather fans would prefer some clouds but the days are starting pretty cold and the fish are feisty and looking up even with the sunshine. Was down near Bondurant yesterday and there wasn't a hopper to be seen or heard-- guess consecutive nights with lows around 20 finally did them in? It's weird to be putting on those ridiculously small, hard to see size 14s and 12s!

A buddy told me yesterday the NWS forecast for October is for it to be warm in the Jellystone region. That, ( if it holds true), and all the water will prolly have some of the browns running late....maybe past closures in some areas. Should make for some excitable fall fish for a while.

The B-Rec has agreed to change plans for dropping the flows on the Snake river in JH. Unfortunately, it will likely not be enough to stop a fish kill over the winter. Some cutties will make it out of the comfy side channels in the Park but many will not. They will drop the flows by 150cfs Sunday, 10/2 to help ease anglers out cry before they take it down 500cfs on Monday....from what I understand. Better than the original plan but c'mon. A little help for the fish please. Crossing my fingers enough fish get out before it is too late.
----
The fishing on the Snake has been good. Seems like better than most other area large rivers. Smaller streams have been hit or miss over the last 10 days or so. The Buffalo fork has seen excellent dry, nymph and streamer fishing recently. Still enough to water to float it in a 1 or 2 man!
Big dries and hopper activity have slowed on the Snake. They are good flies for indicators and small fish still eat 'em but the bigger cutts have gone to gorging on our fall hatches below the surface and to eating bait fish. The fella in my boat did take 2 16" fish on thursday, close to the surface. One on a mahogany cripple pattern and the other on a mahogany adult. So the big fish will still eat on top but only if conditions are perfect...which they were for about and hour.
The South Fork has slowed in a big way, (2nd hand), but should pick up within a week, 2 at the most. They will hopefully bring flows down a but there too. Cool, rainy weather next week might spark some interest regardless of flows.
Bottom Line: BWO's right around the corner. Tricos are and will be around in the areas we generally see them. And, streamer season is just beginning!
Fishing has slowed dramatically on the South Fork, (2nd hand), but outta pick up within a week, 2 at the most.

Yep that's a fun river, nice to get away from the crowds eh?
Did you fish today? Man it was hot. Last few days too. I hope you knocked him in the head and had him for dinner otherwise...
I wonder how that trout you took a pic of liked getting dragged across those dry-ass-hot-as-fuck-in-the-sun rocks so you could fumble-fuck around with him while he's flopping around bangin his dome dying so you can get a pic to post on the innertubes. Bet you got your hands wet before you laid em there real gentle-like, right?
Damn I can't keep my mouth shut anymore about the way I see trout handled that are intended to be released, sorry that's my hang-up but MAN some of you need to realize that even if you release trout after mis-handling them they are still gonna die after your roughhousing!!
Again, sorry for the rant if you kept this fish but if you need some instruction I'd be more than happy to take you fishing with me and show you ANYTIME how to properly handle a trout as I live in Bozeman too or maybe read here:http://www.fish.state.pa.us/educatio...ch_release.htm

No worries... Fish tacos for dinner. Multiple fish were caught, most were released right away. It was nice to not see anyone while i was out there.

Couldn't agree more, after the shit I have seen up here the last few days. Where the fuck do people learn, or see how to handle fish? I saw two fish literally thrown back into the river on our last float, one was too far gone the other we rowed to and where able to get going again. Lots so swearing went on directed at the parties involved. I doubt it will make any difference, but at least now they know how to handle a fish.
On the upside fish are starting to stage for their runs up the rivers. Still tough to catch in the lake, but with the cold snap coming our way things are looking GOOD!!!The Worst mistakes, make the best memories.

Floated 3 different sections of the Snake in GTNP early last week. Fishing was off the hook. Ton of pigs. Very healthy fish. Nearly 75-80F every day. Doesn't get much better than that.

speaking of mishandling fish, what kills me is the people that put every trout back in the water gently and efficiently but give whitefish the montana handshake or throw them on the banks.

Hey Impact Douchtub, can't believe no one has mentioned this yet, but you are a tool.
#1. Why the fuck are you hotspotting on a public forum?
#2. IT IS ILLEGAL TO KEEP CUTTIES ON THE SHIELDS YOU FUCKING DUMBASS.
Anyways, I forwarded this to FWP, hopefully you get a big fat fine the next time you're on the water. And please god move back to whatever shitty midwestern state you came from so you can bonk all the walleye you want.
