In variable density 3d, I agree. Talking only off-groomer usage here, this was my first and lasting observation about the ski: below tree line + powder = incredibly easy skiing in the trees and tight places. I do not favour them for skiing in the alpine or on wind/sun effected snow, never have. But continue to do so since it is the only appropriate width/weight ski I have for longer trips.

Marshal, do you have weights on the 120 spoons in both the 179 and 189 length?

I see 189 weight on the website, but not the 179.

Interested to demo both this season.

Also interested to see what the collective thinks of the 148SP as I am unsure how it can get any better than the 138 in the porno-pow.

put it this way: the lotus 138 was totally redesigned from the ground up for 2014 (aka: out dec 1st) to get more "mini-spoon-y". new flex pattern, sidecut profile, rocker profile, literally everything.

the lotus 138 is the inbounds/variable/partially tracked out version (aka everyday inbounds pow ski), where the 148mm spoon is for untracked low density snow. i would compare the 138/spoons with the opposite end of the spectrum: consider a consumer race ski that can be skied all-mountain vs. a WC race ski solely tuned for injected race courses.

the new lotus 138 will carve cleaner than the spoon, flex-optimized for wind/sun effected snow, in a narrower width better suited for tracked out snow. relative to the "old" 138, the new shape will actually carve, and be much more friendly in non-pow conditions.

the spoon 148 makes no compromises for tracked out snow, and is tuned solely for surfing untracked snow.

    my personal quiver will be:
    99 & spoon: tech
    105 & 138: alpine

i look forward to many more people here getting the chance to get their spoons on-snow early this season, since there was a limited amount built last season when they debuted mid-season.

Do you think the 138 redesign will improve the skinning characteristics at all? That was the biggest reason I stopped using the 138s as my BC ski- skinning on them was a nightmare on anything close to an icy skintrack. Just not enough surface contact area.

Marshal, much impressed with the production qualities of the Spoon compared to the current 138.

Will this new 138 be lighter and a thinner profile like the current Spoon is now? Some cool technology happening in the Spoon that has got to be fun in a narrower ski as well I'd bet.

Did I read that right? Available at retail Dec 1st 2013 for the new 138?

    "my personal quiver will be:

Last we talked it was the new RPC and the newest Spoon version. That was a quick change in well less than a year.

I recall when we talked this summer regarding weights of the RPC, you were all about the 120 SP. Interesting to see it not in your quiver above.

Owning more pairs of the 138 shape than i care to admit, it will be interesting to see if P3 + new design can dethrone the 120 for those semi tracked out/non-pristine conditions. Cant say the iterations of the 138 I own are more than tolerable there.

Seriously? You have roughly 134 cm of skin contact underfoot. But in all honesty, I do take out different boards when spring rolls around;-)

I know this will sound silly, but I am really trying to only own 2 skis each for inbound and skinning. Trying to simplify my life. To compound that, I have gotten addicted to narrower and narrower skis (I had forgotten how fun firm bumped up snow is on 85mm, and even ~100mm), super efficient bc travel (stupid trail running), as well as the stability and surf of ultra wide skis (spoon).

Having design influence does not help, in that basically the whole dps quiver are skis I really like. There is not a ski I would change that is not getting that change.

So if I wanted 1 pair of inbounds or bc skis, it would be the new 120. a total of 2 skis would be rpc (inbounds) and l120 (bc). 3 pair of inbounds or bc skis, the center would be the l120.

Maybe I just need 6 skis - but i am trying to be disciplined over here!

The l138 has not been pressed yet, but I think it will be basically the same weight as the spoon, since it's narrower, but has a little different snow focus.

Last night we were watching video we shot eleven years ago, the "storm of thr century" we made it to Winter Park on Monday night after spending the previous week in Jackson. The fattest ski was an Explosive. My current fattest is the Wailer.

Ha! Different strokes for different folks i guess.

11 years ago, my daily driver was a 110mm waist pow+, and rocked spatulas when it snowed.

Good on you for streamlining things. And, abiding by the live simply moniker.

Maybe its our heavy snow and a recent interest with S/M but there are still four spots in the Dynafitted lineup in the basement: 88 UF, 99 UF, 115 UF & 138 UF. But, I am a bit obsessive;-)

Just please PLEASE don't change the 138 too much. The most confidence inspiring pair of boards that have been strapped to my feet. What is a thread without some goddam pictures anyway? Kudos to Shasti for leaving some decent sloppy-seconds on this one.

Sooo... When can we start ordering the Pure3 W84 Would be nice to see some competition to the Bond-X in a modern shaped light weight ski.

You'll need to ask someone else in the Ask TGR forum to check on that, hop. Nothing shows up on my limited mod powers view. The posts were permanently deleted, leaving no trace I can detect. If it's all that important to you, pursue it there with a certified web geek.

I have 4 days on the Spoon last week in the Monashees and liked them a lot. My first DPS so really impressed by the quality. The ski does what no other ski can do in pow. It's not a ski I'll ever use a ton but if I'm going to Canada in winter it comes with.

Sooooo...what to use for skins when your ride is 148 underfoot? I see that BD is making 140mm skins. Any other companies make 'em in that range? I can hack a solution but I would prefer not to.

BD sells the split skins at 160mm. I haven't used these, but I would say they are probably a good bet for something 148 underfoot

Didn't read the comments about white skis until just now so these may be a mistake, but I have a few weeks of skiing planned this winter for these surfboards:
