Sorry for going dark after posting a question.
Looks like we are locked in to drive, although I already know this is a terrible idea. Flying is the way to do it, and that's what I will be doing mid February, assuming I'm not in prison for killing my co-pilot on this trip.
I always fly wherever I go, so a roadtrip is needed to experience something different for a change, this will most likely be the last road trip for awhile, so I'm good with it.
We are leaving in a week, wish me luck.

Get a new co-pilot and fly. Sounds like your asshole buddy is already ruining your weekend...unless he's a she then we need some nekkid pics to justify it and stories of all the roadblows you get in 18 hours.

Was at Taos Tuesday. Hardpacked. Not looking to get much fresh by the time you get here (1" last night). 50% of the ridge is open, but make sure your edges are sharp, or you're going to go for a few rides.
What's another 3 hours? Go to Silverton.... or do the southwest loop... Taos>Wolf Creek>Durango (check out the backcountry/powder cat skiing)>Silverton>Telluride....

Never. Again. Ended up being a 20 hour drive stopping only for gas and quick meals. The fact that they got hit by fresh snow a day after getting back to ewston was the kick to the nuts.
live and learn.

It's mediocre in New Mexico right now, that's the sad truth. It's been VERY warm, so the snow is settling fast. Keep your eyes open for snow snakes and all the usual unmarked obstacles. Taos will be fun, if only for the sake of getting out and being there.
I'm heading 3-4 hours north, there's a storm a-brewing!
