Your wrong. Having your heel locked in is not an excuse to sit back on your heels on your 130mm rockered K2's and bomb groomers all day.

When you bomb groomers all day, no one will notice that you are in the backseat.

    Ouch, bro. Ouch.

So I saw a guy with a free heel yesterday with a huge beard, sunglasses, and a rickety old backpack.

The thing is, he wasn't very good.

I'm pretty sure the fourth seal has been opened.

Q: What did the telemarker say when he ran out of weed?

    A: These bindings suck!

I'll always have fond memories of my tele days but it's getting harder and harder to motivate to get out there on the pins now.

LOL that's exactly what it feel like too. You virtually cannot get any energy into a ski with the doorhinge setup, especially loading up the tails.

Maybe you would like a lesson?

A skilled telemarker with properly set up gear and strong legs can get plenty of high energy in their carved turns, balanced, not on the tails.

Problem is most telemarkers I see have:

    1) ridiculous gear (or improperly set up gear)
    2) muscles not strong enough to drive the rear ski properly in a high energy turn
    3) poor technique (fake-a-mark)

The only reason telemarking gets a bad rap is it's difficult to do well and most people never get beyond the weak intermediate stage. Plus, when it's done well it's so much fun (and it looks fun). This gets some of the fixed heel crowd who think they have what it takes to give it a go. Generally, they give up before they develop the necessary strength and technique. Then they come on forums like this and bash it 'cause they can't do it.

I have no doubt that you're correct, but the irony is I know plenty of people who have taken up Tele due to the fact they suck on Alpine and Tele gives them an excuse.

The problem with tele being dead, is that it makes it far cooler, for some. Thus tele will never really die...

Oh, & I suck & I've always got an excuse...

Is it possible to suck so much on alpine that tele, which is harder than alpine, actually covers one's suck?

    They must have really sucked.

I thought about learning tele whilst my wife leant to ski, to kill my time with her on the flat groomers each weekend. I decided that skiing backwards on alpine was a more practical skill to acquire instead.

Most tele skiers I know are out hunting pow far away from lift served and judgemental alpine skiers. I like taking folks who alpine at the resort into the ECBC. They bust out their tele gear and suck all day long, which sends them back to the resort so they can click in and ski the same old lines and pretend they are bad assed. Yawn. AT is overkill for most east coast back country. In big Mtn. enviornments, I think AT makes alot of sense, but back in the shrubs on the hills we call Mtns, telemark lives on. A resort-bound brother was telling me the other day that telemark at the resort is the new snowboarding. Telemark on liftserved may be dead, in fact, it should have been aborted.
