    Mount Bailey???

Anyone happen to know what the deal is with Mount Bailey this year? I was looking to plan a cat trip and the price looked perfect, but they haven't been answering the phone or responding to emails and the webiste hasn't been updated. Anyone know what's going on with them or have any recommendations for other good cat operations?

    Thanks

    Cletus Rocks!

Anywho, sounds like Bailey didnt get a permit this season. So if there's no cat operation there, guess that means sledneck/skiing there for me. If I find out more I'll post it here 1st!

I am pretty sure Baily has a permit. Mark Elling will know as he is guideing there. I'll ask him when he gets back from the islands this week. There was some in fighting over control but that has been settled. Diamond Lake Resort has always held the permit for the cat operation. It is early and not nearly enough snow yet.

My guess is that since it won't fucking snow in the PNW, they've all committed suicide. I'm still deciding if I want to do it bloody or with pills.

... or you could move to Alta.

If I hadn't thought of that, I really should kill myself.

Hopefully we'll be skiing all through Utah's mtb season, though that still might not be a fair trade off.

I've been interested in Bailey as well. What the approach like? Is touring in possible or do you need a sled. If sled's the answer then is it possible to run laps with the sled or do you hike/skin?

You can skin it as the cat grooms the road to the top, but spring time is the best for skinning. Long skin otherwise, unless you hitch a ride w/ one of the sledneck running around. Bring your own tow rope, a sixer is a good ride bribe.
Pretty fun especially north and east sides.

Mount Bailey is definitely running this season. We have our same special use permit in place that we've had for 23 seasons and will be running as soon as we have the snowpack to operate....and after my day at Mt. Bachelor yesterday, that probably won't be too long!

There have been some changes that have taken a couple of years to materialize, but they are all in place now....the result for our customers will be a much more comfortable ride up, but everything else is virtually unchanged. We have a brand new custom bombadier snowcat that seats 12 people....we will only run one cat per day, so those 12 people will have 5000 acres of skiable terrain to themselves....we can always find untracked, even after long periods without new snow. The same guides who have been up there for years will be back after a short hiatus last season.....Oz will be the lead guide and basically running the show along with Todd Still, Mark Elling, Chris Trask, and me. I'm a rookie up there with only 8 seasons on the mountain, if that tells you about the level of experience among the guides. Check out our new website: www.catskimtbailey.com .

We're back to basics.....all of the guides love to ski on that mountain and show other people a good time....thats why we pulled it back together. If you know the terrain on the mountain, you know what I'm talking about. If not, give Oz a call on the 800 number from the website, he can talk about it all day if you let him......

the snowpack is finally coming together in the PNW and we'll hopefully be up and running by mid-december. Feel free to send me a PM if you want to know more and I can give you a call...... -Steve

Could we get enough people together and take the whole cat? That would be sweet

Note: For those that haven't been to Bailey, you __have__ to go. The North Wall chutes are awesome and Bailey has the best cat skiing I've ever done in the US.

I had an epic 18" day there in March a couple of years ago. 6 runs of 2500+ feet untracked cold smoke. Good to hear its going well. Cascades have been getting pummeled the past few days.

I had 2 bottomless storm days at Bailey a few Januarys ago. The mountain is incredible - tons of terrain, lots of chutes, drops, cliffs, etc. Highly recommend the trip. The guides are avy safe, but once they feel comfortable they're not afraid to take you into some good steep shit. Be sure to buy beers for your guides at the bar afterwards.

Steve was one of our our guides both days and was a blast to ski with. He also has some great southern Oregon B.C. experience and knowledge. We ran into him later that Spring on the rim of Crater Lake - doing some fine skiing w/ a superb backdrop.
