TR: 1/1-3/2011 Silverton and Mt Axtell, 12,055′ Starting the Year off RIGHT

Well with the storm arriving Wednesday and continuing through Friday it seemed like a good time to head south. My friends Danny and Nate were already down there so I packed up the 4Runner and made for the hills. The plan was to hit Silverton for a couple days then head up to Crested Butte and ski something. more words and stuff at my blog http://makingturns.com/?p=1089

Great footage. I was up there the same day and we probably crossed paths. That day will go down in the memory book for sure.

It was good to meet you too. Let's get out sometime Wilder.

Isn't Orvis Hot Springs awesome. I love the gravel bottom in the big pool. So great on the feet after a hard day on the hill

Does the chopper pick you back up or do you end up in a drainage that you can ride to the road for the shuttle pick up? I haven't done the Silverton chopper yet.

You end up at the bottom of Hells Gate. The Heli access the terrain on the other side of the exit road. I think they also have permits for stuff further away and give you a lift back when they access that stuff

    Nice stoke!

I was down there on Thursday (12/30) and unfortunately the passes closed and we had to ski Friday (12/31) as well . On Thursday we all found the white room more times than we could count. It was pure $$$$ all day!

Axtel (and GoldenBoy) delivers, eh? Easily some of my favorite skiing, sledding and bike riding occurs on that mountain. It is a true gift to this valley.
