More sad news, Skier dies at keystone

SUMMIT COUNTY, Colorado — A Centennial man was killed Sunday when he collided with a tree while skiing at Keystone Resort.

Sean Bender, 38, was skiing Prospector, a blue run, at approximately 11 a.m. when he hit a tree and was killed, according to a statement from the Summit County Coroner's Office. He was taken to Keystone Medical Center following the accident. Coroner Joanne Richardson was called in at approximately 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

Bender died of blunt force trauma to the chest, the statement said. He was wearing a helmet at the time of his accident.

He leaves behind a wife and 9-month-old daughter.

    So sorry for (everyone's) loss.

This thread gave me the chills, this is pretty much exactly what happened to me two weeks ago, but I got away with 6 broken ribs. If there had been a branch at the point of impact, I would likely be dead.

    Crazy.

What actually happened to you? Catch an edge or tip too close to a tree?
6 broken ribs is nothing to sneeze at! In fact don't even sneeze!

Not to derail this thread, but I was riding Snow King with a protroller friend. We were going down 'survey', (basically steepest spot on the hill). I was fully, 100% in the white room in tight trees, and just didn't quite make my speedcheck...so a lodgepole slowed me down REAL quick.

It was a...trip...of a toboggan ride down, pretty technical extraction.

    Holy fucking PAIN.

Thoughts and prayers to the real subject of this thread, though.

Not wanting to derail either, just your point of view on avoiding this type of injury.

No, that was me, I forgot I had that in my sig, and I dont post much. Sean never did get a chance to make it out here for some wakeboarding, but we often visited him and his wife and stayed at their condo in silverthorn. My wife and I were trying to get to Colorado this winter to visit.

And thanks to everyone for the good wishes.

A friend of mine, who is a very, very strong skier caught an edge one day on a groomer and went into the trees and broke most of his ribs.

So sorry to hear that. I wish we could know more, though. Prospector's an easy effin' run and the skier involved was a good skier, so something must have been amiss. I'd like to know if it was sheer ice he may have come across, a hidden obstacle, white out conditions, SOMETHING. Does anybody know more details?

My condolences to the family and friends. ++Vibes++
