It's Clinic Time: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Ski Shop Mags: How's it going?

Who's Good, Who's Bad and Who's Ugly? Most of our reps are really good. Our coolest and best informed rep is Smith. Lots of fun history in our Valley.

We're three nights into a two week schedule of edutainment and swag.

Surely some can report on the happenings. Tonight was a classic.

our armada rep used "hot dog down a hallway" to describe drilling skis with the wrong bit.
hilarity ensued, the girls in the room chuckled, very awkwardly.

Burton rep told me that a pair of boots "can't tell what you're packing" when talking about mens/womens boots.

Again, we're a few nights into a full schedule of edutainment and swag. Usually one night explodes (degenerates?) into a full blown party.

So far so good. A nice slow start is always better.

I work in hard goods, so the clinics are always great. Reps for hard goods pretty predictably get out on the mountain. A soft good rep may never have skied at all.

stickers and discount codes are ok...but at least hook up some free tees and beenies. Atomic rep handed out legit hoodies and the Armada rep let everyone grab all they could carry from a massive schwag box of real products.

Smith reps always knowledgeable but this year Burton took the cake even though I don't ride. Pizza, Beer, stickers then a grab bag. Made out with Anon Hawkeye's, a flask, t-shirt, belt, wax, and of course proforms. Oh, he also knew what he was talking about, and for you snowboarders around here he's still on a camber board.

I love workin a tech only shop. No boring marketing sessions to sit through. The swag is cool if you don't have rep buddies I guess.

A few years ago our Nordica rep was on blow. And admitted it.

    Beer. But NO pizza!

I do. Some of the reps have been around for a long time now- real fixtures in the ski business. Very entertaining.

So far this is an up year for swag. I consider it a bellwether for the industry.

"It's Clinic Time: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly" could have been an epic thread title in the Padded Room.

I have found that those that think that they can't get anything out of the yearly clinics seem to be coming from the "too-cool-for-school know-it-alls."
Sure, it's a lot of review but what's wrong with getting payed to sit there, get swag, drink beer, and learn about the latest gear that you are selling?

As someone that puts together the actual info for clinic's I'd love to hear feedback on what works and what doesn't work.

    Hand outs vs powerpoint?

Also would guys rather have better swag or a deeper discount on product?

Well done, succinct videos plus a rep who can engage the audience. If the product is any good, deeper discounts rule. Half the swag gets thrown away anyway.

    This year:

    Best beanie - Line
    Best t-shirt: Atomic Automatic
    Best ball cap: Dalbello
    Best beer opening device: Head
Best codes: Tie between Arc'teryx and Dynafit
    Best clinic: ABS

Fortunately there are none of those types on TGR
Be careful about buying snowboard goggles for skiing. Snowboard goggles come in right eye and left eye (for goofy-footers) dominant models. This can make it hard to see correctly when skiing because you are facing straight down the hill, not sideways.

no swag. make it as easy as possible for everyone in the shop to get your gear on the hill.
signed 'shop forms' or 'code cards', get shop folks stoked.
no ones getting rich, working in a ski shop. discount gear and skiing, is what it's all about.
and some shops are busier than others, we do huge race/season tune work, not a lot of time to sit.

How about beer koozies? Too many to count, and you can't even recycle them . . .
