We were still “on duty” during Josh’s set. Sadly many others in line also missed it because security couldn’t figure out how to get folks in quickly enough.

Luckily by the time Noah Kahan played on Sunday night, they figured out how to get the ~5k fans in well in advance of Joy Oladukon taking the stage.

What a scene for NK and at least one more reason why I don’t go see pop music shows. My wife and I were in front of the soundboard but couldn’t hear NK singing since all the 14-24 year old girls thought they were seeing Taylor Swift and screamed all the lyrics. We moved to the back and the sound was great.

The Kid finally picked a show for us to go to… Backseat Lovers.

Tomorrow night, I know nothing about them, and I’m excited.

JRAD with only about 1200 people. I went from section 209 to the rail. They brought it… especially Shakedown St.

    The CONCERT thread

Beck killed it last night at Ogden Twilight, but first things first, La Lom: Wife and I were having drinks and talking to friends during the opener when we heard them start to play Juana la Cubana. So we went to our seats to check them out and they were really good. Self-described Cumbia influenced, they had a great sound and really seemed to click on stage, all having fun and grooving.

When Beck came out, he was an acoustic, one man show. He played some of his more folk music inspired, deep cut stuff and seemed pretty happy to be getting a good crowd response for it. Somewhere around 5 songs in he brought in three of his band mates. He played a few more songs, getting into the hits from Sea Change, including Lost Cause. The crowd was really getting into it at that point.

For the last five or six songs, he announced that he was going to try an experimental super group, and he brought out the entire band from La Lom. They closed out with Devil's Haircut, Epro, Loser, One Foot and Where It's At. You could tell all of the musicians were having a really good time, Beck pointing at various guitarists and having them play short solos back to back, smiling, laughing and dancing. Definitely one of the better concert vibes I've been to lately.

Wow - and I thought ~150 in a 800 person room for the Devon Allman/Donovan Frankenreiter show last Friday felt small.

1200 must be less than 1/10th of capacity of the Waterfront Amphitheater.

It really was a fun night there. Wife and daughter enjoyed themselves, MarsB and his gf, talked to Moe for about 120 seconds. Heard you were around as well, glad you had a great time as well.

I caught him live about a year ago, not knowing his music very well. Great song writing and the live version of Chocktaw Bingo was amazing. Really like the latest album.

Agreed about the latest album. He played at least a half dozen off of it including Blackberry Winter, If it don’t bleed, Operation Never Mind, & Canola Fields.

Yeah, those are great. I saw him only knowing Chactaw and left with a huge appreciation for his other songs and songwriting. I did hear he doesn't mix up the setlist too often, but will prob check him out next time he's in town.

Kurt Vile has quite the collection of guitars with him on tour, including at least 3 different acoustic. Here are only a few that he played. Every song was a different rig.

Worth seeing then for someone who isn't a superfan of his? I like some of his work.

Def worth seeing. His opening act, Joanna Sternberg, was not worth seeing. It was like listening to Sesame Street songs for a clinically depressed elementary school kid. (note: it looks like she isn’t playing out west with him)

On another note, if anyone finds themselves in BTV over Thanksgiving weekend, Lukas Nelson & POTR are playing Higher Ground on Friday 11/24.

Trip Report - 2023 Sisters Folk Festival Sisters OR
31 acts on 7 stages over three days
    https://www.sistersfolkfest.org/lineup
I manage 30 volunteers, which allows me to spend lots of time roaming

    The acts that I loved

Crys Matthews - singer songwriter focused on social justice issues. She says as a large black left-handed lesbian who’s also a band nerd and preachers kid she is the poster for intersectionality. Incredibly powerful and moving lyrics

This one came after they read a news report about a church in Kansas that claimed AOC was leading a coven of witches casting spells on Trump

Before I get to others, I will bring up that Daniel Rodriquez (founder and former member of Elephant Revival) played too. I was not impressed. Sounds like he listened to too much Jackson Browne after ER broke up. Also didn’t play Sing to The Mountain, even though it was a full moon. Was talking to a random lady who recently went to Texas to hear ER - she was disappointed too, both in his direction and failure to play Sing to the Mountain.
    Sorry no good photo

    Moving on
    Next up Donna the Buffalo
Really hard to pigeonhole. Sort of a cross of rock, zydeco and reggae.
    https://www.donnathebuffalo.com/

    Sorry no pics turned out

    Next
    Seth Walker -
Another one hard to pigeonhole - kind of smoky blues with a country sensibility

    Now for my two favorites

First, Shamarr Allen and the Underdawgs from the Lower Ninth Ward of NOLA.

And for my absolute favorite of the festival…
Bab l’ Bluz (Gateway to the Blues)
It’s like a group of traditional North African musicians ate acid.

    Incredibly high energy

    ^^^Solid lineup.

We just saw Fantastic Cat open for Low Cut Connie a few weeks ago. They were very talented but I couldn’t figure out if they really have a future or if they are likely to end up on the Westchester County wedding band circuit.

Donna the Buffalo is well known in the Northeast as they started out in the finger lakes but really caught a toe hold in the college town of Northampton, MA. They usually draw a large crowd of old hippies that like to shake their shorts.

Bab L’Bluz is playing 3 nights in Randolph, VT? That’s an odd booking for sure.

^^^We definitely punch above our weight for draw. The creative director has been at it a while and has developed a solid reputation. Attendance is about 5000, or 40% more than population of our little town.

Fantastic Cat was a late addition (like Thursday PM) when Gina Chavez called in sick. Their close out song was Band on the Run. “The Beatles walked so Wings could fly!” At the bridge to the last verse, everyone except the acoustic guitar changed instruments without missing a beat. They are all very talented but this is a side project for them so no idea if they will take off or stay regional.

This is Bab L’ Bluz first trip to the US so not surprised they are playing some small venues. Again, go see them for some high energy psychedelic N African music.

And did I mention Yousra is gorgeous and fun to hang with? She’s the only one in the band that speaks English, and not incredibly well. She did like my description “Fucking Awesome isn’t a strong enough endorsement!”.

There were a bunch of others this weekend that are quite good as traditional country-folk singer-songwriters or Celtic pipe-drum acts. It just doesn’t float my boat like the others.

Saw Alice In Chains with Royal Thunder a couple nights ago.
The band sounded great and the (not so) new singer was really good!
And Royal Thunder's singer is just plain fantastic!
