JENNY DON’T AND THE SPURS (https://www.jennydontandthespurs.com/)
    W/Blackstallion
9/11/24 @ The Holland Project, Reno, Nevada
    (https://hollandreno.org/)

I’ve mentioned The Holland Project before. It’s a small, all ages non-profit venue located at the south end of the Midtown District in Reno. When you attend one of their shows, it’s like seeing a band in your Dad’s converted garage. And since it’s all ages, there’s no alcohol, which means no drunken idiots sloshing beer on your shoes. Also, for some strange reason it’s the only venue I’ve been to in the past 10 years where nobody keeps their phones out for the whole show taking crappy pictures and pointless video or live posting to The Gram. If and when—which is extremely rare—somebody does bring out their phone to snap a picture, they keep it low and out of other people’s sight lines or they move to the side of the venue and take a picture without obstructing anybody else’s view. Heck, I feel dirty just taking a few pics when I am at a show. Bottomline, I really dig this venue.
At any rate, 90% of the shows held here fall into the punk or “experimental rock” pigeonhole. And 99% of the time I have never heard of any of the bands that come through. I’d say about once every 3 months or so I spend a few hours YouTubing the bands on the venue’s site calendar to see if any of them are to my liking.
In the case of Jenny Don’t and the Spurs I did a quick Google, stumbled upon a live Audiotree Session from earlier this year and after three songs I put the video on pause and bought me a ticket. I was not disappointed.
The band is a 4-piece and they are crackerjack en fuego. Drummer Buddy Weeks plays traditional grip with gusto. Lead guitarist Christopher Marks is all about the land-locked surf twang and spaghetti western swirl. Bassist Kelli Halliburton comes from that Old School rock low-end tribe akin to John Entwhistle or Bill Wyman, yet he’s also super animated with plenty of Mick Jagger like swagger. As for front woman Jenny? She shuffles, skitters, and shimmies across the stage, tosses off rock star poses with nonchalance, and has a smile that could melt the moon. In short, she’s charismatic as fuck. And she croons immaculate.
They also are a streamlined machine, beginning their short but blazing set at exactly 9:20 right after the opening act had packed their last piece of gear from the stage. Half the audience was still outside getting snacks and having a smoke break when Jenny strummed her first chord. Speaking of audience, there were only about 45 of us in the crowd, which was nice from my perspective.
Jenny and the boys dished out a non-stop 55-minute set of sizzling western hoo-haa.
Opener Blackstallion are a Reno 5-piece that had a ragged, early Pavement vibe. I liked ‘em.

Definitely recommend Jenny and her posse, though.

Every time I saw Jane’s or Porno For Pyros and they sucked was due to PF chugging red wine during the show. Pretty sure the tannins fuck up his voice; I get hoarse when I drink red wine, fwiw.

I hope they don't quit/cancel or whatever since I want to see the show. I just expect PH is gonna sound like garbage.

Rather than speculate, she will just continue to enable.

They should be the opener for the Oasis tour

So sad. Said it before--they *can* be one of the best live bands on the planet.

At this point I think they have to hang it up, between Farrell's addiction issues and the general failure to make it work. Vocal ranges like Perrys don't age well. Hopefully he gets the help that he needs. If Avery really did hit him, I'm going to guess he did something to deserve it.

Also, Farrell's wife is a nutter and posts like that are only throwing vodka on the flames.

Edit: the other night I went down a YouTube rabbit hole listening to isolated vocal tracks of various rock artists. Farrell and Layne Staley had absolutely wild range. I was actually most blown away by Staley--listen to his vocals on Love Hate Love. Anyhow, damned shame.

Honestly, more than Jane’s what I’d really be keen to see is Avery and Navarro tour their Deconstruction album.
    I really loved that project.

Man, I’m no music expert, but I think Staley is in a different universe talent wise vs. Farrell.

All of this Jane’s talk got me to listen to Nothing Shocking today while kicking around the house. Such a great fucking album.

Maybe I only imagine it but Jane’s may have had more of an effect on popular music at the time than GnR or Nirvana. I saw Janes in Paris at Elysee Montmartre in 1990. That’s a cool memory

I spent the weekend at shows in the Bay Area and each show got worse the further away from home I got and the more I paid…

Will drop some quick reviews after I formulate and coagulate my thoughts, but quick takes:

BEAT (Adrian Belew, Danny Carrey, Tony Levin, and Steve Vai) 9/13 - show was hit & miss

SOUL COUGHING 9/14 - perhaps the worst show I have seen in 40 years thanks to gawdawful sound. And the band just seemed bored to boot.

Correct you are. In fact, the band had more energy than the crowd. The crowd was a bit... aged.

They played fewer Petty/Heartbreaker tunes than I was expecting, but I have to say - their own stuff was very enjoyable.

    Glad we brought ear protection...

Wonder what that means for Love and Rockets…I was kinda more interested in seeing them, to be truthful.

2 nights of Greensky at Red Rocks was phenomenal. Holly Bowling on keys adds a whole new dimension, I'd love to see her as a full time member.
