Went to see The Wallflowers the other week since it was part of the Alive at Five concert series that is within stumbling distance of my house. I'd say it was worth the $15 I paid to go see it but I'm very upset the that Bud took over the beer sponsorship from Heinken. I'll probably also go see Bret Michaels on July 25th and Chic Corea & The Vigil on August 7.

I'm still on the fence if I want to see Michael McDonald on August 15 since I guess I would like to see him do some stuff from the Doobie Brothers but I really don't like his solo stuff. I have a feeling he will probably do only solo stuff.

Anyone seen Ryan Cabrera he is also playing and looked like he might be someone that might be interesting to see in a cheapy concert because of his association with members of Goo Goo Dolls?

Denver/Front Range Folks: Check out the Rapidgrass Bluegrass Festival in Idaho Springs on Friday and Saturday (7/5-6). It's cheap and features some of the best bluegrass/gypsy swing musicians in the world. Seriously!

Got back last nite from the High Sierra Music Festival. Helped jables here out on his taco stand for a change of pace. Fucking great event. Highly recommend it for mags. Saw Robert Plant on the 4th, Leftover Salmon, Thievery Corporation, Primus (cooked dinner for the band and roadies) and an absolute shitton of others over four days.

If you haven't checked out this festival, you should. Never saw a cop or an altercation of any kind the whole event. People were extremely chill and the whole thing a really cool musical event in the mountains.

Seen a few things lately, most notably the Boston Symphony playing Garcia music w Warren Haynes. Really good time. Tanglewood. Beautiful night. Food people. Music I love played by world class musicians.

friends said BOA last night was magic. Hope like hell Bobby survives until Red Rocks in Sept. Bucket list to see the boys (what's left) playing this music there.

Garth Hudson from The Band came out and led Wilco playing Chest Fever at SPAC last night. Jim James of My Morning Jacket joined the jam on stage.

Dylan fucked with the audience like usual.

wow, TargheeFest did not disappoint. Took of Saturday night just before Bruce Hornsby so that Sunday would be at least semi-productive, but caught every tune of other band friday and saturday.

A few highlights:

Holly Williams kicking it off, Hank Jr's kid. First song was 'Drinkin', 'why are you drinkin' like the night is young' [errr, and it was 4pm and i/we were already a bunch of beers in...]
then she brought her mom on stage to sing a song she wrote for her, about how her mom took the high road when she and Hank Jr split up, and how that kept the family staying positive...strong stuff...

Anders Osborne and John Hiatt basically rocked the place, then Los Lobos got up and did a really fun set, even an Allman bros cover which i'd never heard them do.

Next day started with Sarah Jarosz, who had played Bluegrass Fest but not TargheeFest- great voice, she's on guitar/mando, along with a cello and violin. Great sound, and the first time i've ever heard an opener get shouted back for an encore! The Mother Hips know how to rock, and Son Volt had a great mix of new, finishing with old classics. Jay was pretty fun at the end, simply waved, said 'bye'.

Then the highlight for me, Allen Toussaint. Played a bunch of songs you know by heart but didn't know he wrote. Great storytelling. Then he mentioned he has just been awarded the highest art award, The National Medal of Arts by the President. This was the first concert he had played since the award...so he brought it with him:



Then he had some swag to throw to the audience, so he brought out a guest on the piano, the 16 year old son of the promoter who books the Targhee festivals. And the kid crushed it! Then Allen sat down with him and they dueled for a bit, it was pretty incredible, what an awesome dude! Great festival overall-

edit: Just looked Los Lobos up, they're not coming near me but they are doing some CA, WA, OR and AZ dates with Los Lonely Boys and some with both Los Lonely Boys and Alejando Escovedo, those would be fun.

Tye did you get to Jazzfest this year?

I am such a fan of Anders live, his recordings are good but dont tell the story of his live playing.

We'v seen LL a bunch, the last time Cesar got pissed and left the stage in the middle of the last song and didnt come back for the encore, (Cinnamon Girl). The show is memorable because my wife's ex jumped onstage and tried to sing at one of the mics, the drunken idiot. David Hidalgo is a nice player, love that band.

I have been to a few music festivals and High Sierra is definitely the best by FAR. I mean what other music festivals can you bring cans and bottles to two of the stages and then bring alcohol to the main stage as long as it isn't in a can or bottle!!! Even at the main stage I have seen people wheel in kegs and coolers full of cocktails. And yeah it is so chill no one ever has a bad time and everyone looks after each other. Lastly the drugs are really high quality and cheap because they aren't your typical dealers to make money they are there to share their stash at cost!!!

mrs pinhead and I saw The Steve Miller Band at Tanglewood Monday night. If he comes near you and you're an aging gentleman, such as I, it's a fun trip down memory lane. I wore out Fly Like an Eagle way back then. So many great tunes, his voice, band and playing were tight, and very professional.

Not a ticket I would think to buy, but the missus came through, the weather cooperated, the La Crema flowed like, well, wine....

in that vein caught The Guess Who a few weeks ago in a small 1500 seat venue. all of $20. Sure its only two original members and thier old as fuck but they did do EVERYTHING they were supposed to. And if you were around in the late 60s early 70s, that's quite a catalog.
