Lou Reeds "Sweet Jane" is one of my all time favorites, but Margo Timmons Cowboy Junkie version is smokin' hot.

Beck's Record Club (feat. St. Vincent and Liars) crushing the hell out of INXS' "Never Tear Us Apart":
Runner up - The Faces taking on "Maybe I'm Amazed", although you might want to just listen because Rod Stewart's euro-trash stubble, white jacket and stage moves pretty much shatter the unintentional comedy scale:
We heard you in our twilight caves, one hundred fathom deep below, for notes of joy can pierce the waves, that drown each sound of war and woe.

Aretha Franklin's version of "Respect" is pretty OK.
I also like Sun Kil Moon's take on "Trucker's Atlas" by Modest Mouse.

The Ataris version of The Boys of Summer
Quiet Drive's version of Time After Time (more a case of a totally lame song being redone into something good)The killer awoke before dawn.
He put his boots on.

if anyone says Johnny Cash's version Of Hurt I will slap them. This usually comes from people that don't know Trent Reznor or the point of the song.... but it still amazes me.

Yeah - that version of "Where did you sleep last night?" was beyond spooky. Who actually wrote that song?
Like others have said - any song Hendrix covered.
"America" Simon & Garfunkel covered by Yes.
Ulver's cover of "Planet Caravan" by Black Sabbath edges out the original only because G. actually has a great voice.
I've got a smokin' live version of "Cocaine Blues" done by Hank III.

Cream - Crossroads
Tom Petty, Prince, etc. doing While my Guitar Gently Weeps (there's an awesome version of this with clapton too).
But really, the best cover ever is obviously:

I've heard a bunch of different versions that were folkie and with some different lyrics, but the slow pace and the cello in the Nirvana version add extra creepiness. Being sung by a guy who was one month out from blowing his brains out doesn't make it any more cheery.

I'm not trying to challenge you but just wondered if you could explain further. I'm not a big Reznor/NIN fan although I do listen to some of his work (his new stuff is interesting). I liked Hurt when I first heard it (and the really well done video) but also really liked Johnny Cash's version.
There were rumours that when Reznor heard the cover he thought he might never play the song himself again live (please don't flame me if that's not true - I'm just asking).
I don't know Reznor and I also don't know the point of the song - I'm genuinely curious if you have the time to fill me in.

And his "Hey, Joe", and his "Like A Rolling Stone," and his "Tax Free," and probably a number of others he covered that aren't coming to mind right now (I'll agree not to throw in his instrumental "Sunshine of Your Love" just to keep the peace).
And in that general vein, someone should beat Sting about the head for his attempt at Hendrix's "Castles Made of Sand." (In college I had the Hendrix original version playing and some kid asked who was playing that Sting song. If ROTFLOL had existed back then I guess I would have done it.)
I can't say it's necessarily better, but Talking Heads' "Take Me to the River" is a nice cover.
And of course there are at least 1000 jazz songs that have (multiple) cover versions that are better than the originals.[quote][//quote]
