Summit - from this thread and the MR thread, sounds like you have at least handled both the Float 36 and Blackjack. Any comparisons/thoughts on both?

I ordered the easy pull modification today for my bag after reading about some failures with people not being able to pull hard enough on the pull handle to activate the airbag.

I just test fired the float 30 using the new easy pull trigger and can say that it is much smoother and easier than the original, which I thought required way too much force. I'd say it's about the same as the amount of force required to trigger an ABS.
Also got to fondle the new 36. Very cool- love the back panel access and the slimmer/taller profile which should keep the weight closer to your body. It seems ridiculously beefy- lots of padding and multiple ply materials- great for heli skiing and jobs where you're rough on your gear, but for the average day tourer, I'd like to see them ditch some of it to shed some weight. Oh, and yes, it carries a snowboard, BUT the ski carry is vertical, no more diagonal (at least that's how the prototype I saw looked).

Thanks for replying, everyone. It appears we have a decent cross-section of people here and a lot of well thought-out discussion

I measured 8.1lbs with a luggage scale. I can put up some pics, however the final production will be different than what I have in a couple of good ways.

Really interested in this pack. Summit, I'd love to see multiple pictures from different angles. Also, a few questions:
1) How will the production units differ?
2) Can you comment on the ski carry? (A-Frame, Vertical, Diagonal?) How does it avoid impacting the bag release?
3) Any hipbelt pockets?
4) Insulated H20?
5) Does it have wet/dry compartments? (i.e. seperate place for skins)
6) I have a really long torso, is there enough adjustment for people built like me, so that the hipbelt/shoudlerpads sit right? At 5'10, I'd probably be 6'2 with proportioned legs. (I usually get Osprey packs in a large and have to trim the waistbelts/cheststraps.)

I have had lots of experience with the ABS backs in the 15 litre and the 30 as well as the float 30 that i purchased a couple of moths ago.
I have toured and helid in the BCa back and helid extensivly in the Abs.
Here is what i found.
1. The abs pack had serious issues when cold. Getting the firing pin into the valve was extremely difficult. Even when you thought it was connected, i would get to the bottom of a run and the handle would be dangling. This happend Regularly.
2. I saw a number of misfires with the firing pin on the ABS pack. This could have been because of the cold, but once again at the bottom of the run the handle would be out and we could not reengage it. Somehow the handle had fired with out the bag being deployed.
BCA Float
1. I love the handle pull set up. When not in use tuck it away. When getting in and out of a heli there is no valve to dick around with. Just unzip the pocket and there it is. When putting the back in the basket, just zip the handle back in.
2. Although heavy, the pack itself rides great on my back and i dont even notice it is there. I have toured with it, heli'd and skied with it. It fits great.
3. I dont mind the ski attachment, it holds the skis great. I dont snowboard so that is not an issue.
I saw an abs pack save a friend of mine in AK 3 years ago, and ever since then i am a big fan.
I hope this helps.

Off the top of my head, as I only breifly had the BJ: biggest differences are:
BJ: top entry and one side zip
F36: Lower backpanel entry, full zip front panel entry.
BJ: Separate Avi Tool Pocket
F36: Avi Tool Pockets in main compartment
BJ: Main compartment, avitool pocket.
F36: Divided main compartment with sleeves and two internal zip pockets, large top pocket, two large hip pockets
BJ: A frame, diagonal, vertical carry
F36: vertical carry
1. I'd have to ask BCA, but I know:
a. There won't be that funk separation between the airbag and the main compartment at the top. (That will look way better)
b. The frontpanel zipper will go ALL THE WAY down!
2. Vertical carry (you can cant it diagonal if you want) works great. I loved it on my older packs from other companies. Skis on the back panel will not interfere with the bag deploying up and to the sides. I may try to video this.
3. TWO HUGE AWESOME HIP POCKETS! My Mammut pack you can fit a monocular in the hip pocket. In the BCA you can fit: gloves, monocular, compass, camera, folding ruler, map, thermometer, crystal card, snacks, hand lens! They are very very functional and convenient. It's perfect for when you are skinning with your jacket in your pack!
4. Yes.
5. Kinda. The main compartment has both deep and shallow sleeve where you could keep skins and the shovel handle/saw while keeping everything else separate. Not as nice as a separate avi/skin zip compartment, but oh well.
6. YES! It is pure awesome for fit. Next to my friend's ABS pack, the Float 36 is SO much longer. It sits on your hips instead of hugging your belly button like a lot of ski packs do. I am 5'9" and it has great length and adjustment. I HATE SHORT PACKS because they don't carry right. I can't describe the fit and carry any better than this: I don't notice it when I'm skiing down!Originally Posted by blurred

That would be nice. The 36 I saw still had this, hopefully they get rid of it like they did with the new 18. Reminded me of airplane luggage.
Lots of great features and fit, but they need to drop a few pounds if they're going to compete with next year's Snowpulse and ABS offerings which should be in the 6 lb range. Snowpulse figured out how to rig a system that works with refillable cylinders AND with ABS's cartridges (including their soon to come out in the US carbon fiber one) for greater flexibility. I'd like to see BCA do that or at least come up with their own carbon cylinder (which would take a while to get through DOT approval of course).

I've been waiting to see some pics and prices for the new BCA pack and finally stumbled upon this:

It's a good looking pack, I would like to fondle one in person however.

Good stuff here, thanks Summit. I didn't read every post but wanted to make sure...The trigger handle can be removed like the vario right?
Drive slow, homie.
