You probably want to go over that interior with a black light as part of the inspection...

That interior gave me a flashback to the midget dream sequence in the first Twin Peaks.

Hey dude,
That was me that posted the pic of your rig on my morning run to Starbucks with my GF. Thanks for replying. I enjoyed your back story about your rig and it’s nice to hear that you sound like a “normal” working class type of guy vs. the Uber-Wealthy I would expect to own that ride.
I told my GF to park her Prius as close to your rig as possible so I could get a pic with a scale of size of your camper. She was worried you were asleep in it and would wake up and yell at her (LOL), so this is as close as she got.
You mentioned another Earth Roamer in your response that is visible from MT Rose HWY. By coincidence, I live right off the MRH, left side as your going uphill. I marked it with red X. With all due respect for the other owners privacy, am I in the neighborhood? I thought I might pedal past it and on my next MTB ride and be envious (check it out).
I ski Rose and Mammoth mostly. If I see your rig in the parking lot I’ll stop by and introduce myself. If you have the time I would love to see the inside.
Cheers!

I've been eyeing Astro vans, drove one the other day and it was cool, but the mechanic said stay away.
So now I've been thinking soccer mom van...

Test drive it first. I did not get one for a few reasons:
1. Run flat tires are expensive so you are looking at fitting a spare inside or on the roof.
2. Stupid expensive used. And new. For what you get.
3. Mpg not really any better than SUV
4. Soccer mom factor
5. Second row Captain chairs instead of bench. Why do I need a hallway in my car?
That black lifted one .. I want to like it but can't
In the end just get a big SUV. I want a suburban.
And I agree the remaining Astro awd Vans are mechanically sketchy.

Mechanically sketchy how? Yes, you're going to need to do the lower intake manifold gasket at 150-200k. Your transmission will die around 200k if you lift + bigger tires and don't rebuild it. And the front end needs tightening up every 50k (typically idler arms, use Moog.) Otherwise, the engines will run to 300k with basic maintenance. If you're driving mountains a lot a 2003 or later is best for 4 wheel disc brakes.
Mechanics mostly hate astros because they are a bitch to work on with everything shoved up under thd dog house.
Still haven't seen anything else you can buy for <5k and have AWD with that amount of space inside.
I've been looking into sienna as well once my current (2nd) AWD astro gets retired in a few more years.
1. Yeah, AWD has runflats. Runflats sorta suck. No room for spare.
2. Yes expensive, but compared to what other AWD with that amount of space?
3. MPG depends on point of comparison -- better than suburban, same as expedition. What other full size SUVs still exist?
4. Soccer moms are babes.
5. For hauling people I see your point, but if you're going to pull them out to build a camping setup it doesn't really matter.
and that is why van > SUV in most instances. You have far more vertical room inside for building out a comfortable camping setup than you do in any full size suv. With easier to remove seats in case you want to do a swappable setup.
As for the black one -- that's a UUV -- a Toyota project to put a Sienna body on a tacoma frame. That would be dope in real life but probably cost like 50k.

Yeah that's is only like 5 grand worth of work for anyone who doesn't turn a wrench. The absolute newest astro van is 15 years old, and is going to need it.
Soccer moms, as a general rule, are not babes. They are more like Karens, that want to speak with the manager.Live Free or Die

You can get a hitch mount spare tire carrier and avoid run flats:
https://www.amazon.com/CURT-31006-Hi.../dp/B0009YIE1O
You could probably also just get a Jeep Wrangler stock spare tire carrier (that bolts straight to the Wrangler tailgate door) for free, and bolt it to the Astro back door. I threw it away when adding an aftermarket tire carrier to my Jeep, years ago. There's no market for them.
