Seriously, the Klhip nail clippers are worth every penny if you care for your nails. They are sharper, more ergonomic, and just plain nicer than anything else I've come across. Plus, they will replace them for life (I'm on my second pair).

Market is softening for sure many of these beginner van building companies are going to eat it this year mark downs are already started

People fail everyday to realize how much money is out there with people (like me) willing to piss it away on nice toys so I look cool on social media

Unless the stock market tanks 10k points and property values loose half there value good luck

Meanwhile 15% of the population has a fun money disposalable yearly income that easily outdoes 50% of the US populations annual income

Which creates a market for second homes and fun vehicles to drive around

Honestly I’m totally with ya on that. My wife grew up with motor homes and got me hooked on them 25 years ago. Granted my little DIY box camper is kinda Spartan, it still beats sleeping in the back if a truck (I’m old too).

Your a different breed buddy. Spending the time, energy, and brain power to put a camper together like you did is rare, and a killer accomplishment. Super cool.

Pretty poor clearance for Overlanding and the tent top trailer looks expensive. Once you get unhooked and settled in a quick rip around any nearby canyons would be fun.

Who really wanted to sleep on the ground in a $20 tent? That’s what we could afford, so that’s what we did.

I don't understand the aversion to sleeping on the ground in a tent. Get a bomber -20F winter bag, a 6 inch ExPed inflatable mattress, a 12 volt pump, and a freestanding tent you can set up in under a minute. Compared to a 100k van that depreciates over time, and factoring in time value of money, you would come out over 200k ahead in the tent.

Now if you have fastfred money, none of this matters. But owning a recreational vehicle for concessional use doesn't pencil out well financially.

Or just sleep in the back of your truck, skip the tent entirely. A van sounds awesome too, and I'd love to have one, but I can get a lot of hotel nights for what a van costs.

I hate hypotheticals. What ski area or ski town is going to allow some cheap fuck skier to set up a tent in their lots? The answer is none. Can we throw out this idea now? If you want to hike into the woods and smash the snow around to get a nice clear area for your idiotic plan then go for it. I've seen people do it and they pack up pretty early and never come back. It's stupid

I think the idea is that if you're anywhere near lodging, you spend $100 of that $200K you saved and get a proper bed with a shower and other niceties... the tent is for "emergency" use.

Emergency like in a blizzard? Yeah good luck setting up a tent in those conditions. Just stay in your car. Or emergency like all the hotels are booked?

I just can't think like a common moron. I watch them all panic when a flight gets delayed or cancelled or when Wally World is closed for maintenance.

Rolling out of a warm bed, barefoot. Making a greasy egg/bacon breakfast. Putting on WARM boots. Having a bathroom to take a $@#* after the coffee, maybe even a shower. Yeah, that’s my style nowadays. I’ve paid my dues. Heck, back in the day used to go climb ice in Canada and sleep in the Lake Louise men’s bathroom under the sinks until we finally got kicked out. Done with that, and I don’t have “Fast Fred Money” nor do I have pencil and paper

This times a million! The first time I slept in my camper after years and years of tents, back of the the truck, backseat of a suv etc. I thought I had died and gone to heaven!

Sure, if you try to pitch your tent in Aspen or Jackson you will get hassled because those places are inhabited by assholes. But any ski area worth a damn is on National Forest land, surrounded by National Forest land. If you can legally park you car in a spot over night, you can legally pitch your tent there, so long as you are on National Forest land.

Nice of you to ask telee. For car camping, I have a Eureka Zeus. It's cheap (like $100), single wall, free standing, and sets up in under a minute:

    https://www.trailspace.com/gear/eureka/zeus-2exo/

For backpacking and ski mountaineering, I have a couple of tarptents. The best pitching next to your car would be the Moment, which can be freestanding with the use of a second pole. This tent pitches in less than a minute:

    https://www.tarptent.com/product/moment-dw-li/

The tent I use the most is the Stratospire 2, which wouldn't make a good next to car tent as it isn't free standing and takes a bit to set up. But basically a mega mid clone.

    https://www.tarptent.com/product/stratospire-2/

I don't own a bivy tent, but that would be the obvious choice. Bored at night? That's what the bars are for. Wake up in the morning and go straight to the lodge for coffee and shit.

We got a minimalist in here! No wonder dude doesn't get how people rock big RV campers at ski areas. It's cool but I'll stick with having too much shit even though it comes with too much maintenance

A friend of mine has tent camped a few times at Mt Baker in winter, and I think some people do it regularly there. I don't want to tent camp near parking lots/cars due to noise and the tent inevitably getting wet, but I'm pretty comfortable in the back of a station wagon or SUV for the night with a warm bag. My problem is just drying out at the end of the day or to a lesser degree getting warmed up and going in the morning, especially if there is moisture in the air or gear.

Ski RV's, who's sleeping in parking lots?

Even altasnob’s pedantry has reached a new level with this parking lot tent bullshit.

Good luck getting any sleep once the plow driver fires up the chained up articulating loader at midnight while the cats push banks down around your silnylon refuge.

I had a friend who was a night cleaning guy at the local ski area and he spent a majority of the winter living/sleeping in a snow cave he dug out in the parking lot in a snow pile. He's kind of a badass like that. He also won a few big long bike races, and climbs all over the world. Great snowboarder too.

I could list all my tents too, doesn’t mean I sleep in them in a ski area parking lot, just means I have a bunch of tents. Also, I am pretty sure altasnob sleeps in his camper.

A couple people tent camping at Wolf Creek were killed by a snow plow a decade back. If you do it be sure to setup where machines will not be clearing or dumping snow.
