There’s some semi-serious conversations in my home about that plane RV thing. Let the boomer relatives stay there. Another rural example of an in-law unit.

Can anyone school me on why right hand drive Japanese camper vans are a bad idea? They are often 4 wheel drive and can be had for seemingly reasonable amounts in comparison to Westfalias, etc. Aside from being 25+ years old, is there something that I am missing here? They sell fast in the PNW.

Cool. Be interesting to see how he builds it out.

If a person has a bit of scratch this is beautiful promaster build for a skier/biker. Not cheap but looks like a great deal for how well its done. Still has powertrain warrantee

They're severely underpowered. Like 75 horsepower. I too thought this was a good idea: sweet looks, modest budget,
Livable. There are a couple import companies around Seattle, like the one you linked to, and more than a handful vans around. If they're on the freeway they're always a) In the slow lane b) doing 50 c) piloted but (always a)dude looking like he's rethinking his life.

The engine in that van, at its peak, generated 85 horsepower. That number has not increased with time.

This. And the stigma of likely being someone who has a instagram account for their dog, etc etc.

They're cool rigs but the demographic who is buying (mine...) is pretty bad.

The RHD Toyota 4wd vans that I see around town are owned by locals and kept unpretentious. Isn’t there a turbo available for the diesel engines? I was always under the impression that parts and repairs could be problematic in the states.

The Mitsubishi Delica 4WD vans you see all over NZ, AUS had a turbo diesel option with 140 Hp and decent torque. However this category of vans fucking suck in a collision. When I was 25 I didn’t think much about safety, but barreling down a dark highway at 70 as your GF sleeps away in the passenger seat makes you reconsider after a few close calls.

I just glanced at the ad but didn’t see the mileage. Agree with your sentiment.

Didn’t consider the safety angle with these. Thanks!

This is what I would do. Great platform as long as you keep weight in mind with your buildout, since its only a half ton.

The jap vans are super cool, but way underpowered for US interstates, particularly in the West. And sure RHD is "cool," but I bet the novelty wears off pretty quick.

Still entranced by those Delicas. RHD and engine power are negatives. Are they really that unsafe compared to other options?
