Just before Desert Storm, the Air Force was going to get rid of the A-10. The Army offered to take them and asked aviators if we wanted to transition from helicopters to A-10s. I signed up because who doesn't want to ride that gun? Then Desert Storm happened and the USAF decided that it was still cool even if it didn't have a pointy nose. Fucking Air Force....

I've been within 300 meters of the impact zone of those rounds. The earth shook.
Saw one land at King Khalid Military City airbase when it was just the air war going on. It had about 1/4 of one wing shot off and one of the vertical stabilizers was completely gone. Landing gear collapsed about halfway down the runway. Pilot walked away and then collapsed on the ground. Amazing plane.

Back in the day (mid-80's) we lived nearby to Hardwood Bombing Range in Central Wisconsin. Public access looks like it closed in 2019, but you used to be able to go to the range and sit mid-field near the center tower. The field is like a large square with the targets on one side and a line of three towers across the middle of the square for triangulating where the pilot was landing practice bombs or strafing rounds. They had picnic tables right by the center tower. The aircraft would fly various patterns - many times nap-of-the-earth - out around the wasteland that is Central Wisconsin, then line up on the range for a bombing or strafing run. Back then it was mostly A-7 Corsair II's, A-10's, and sometimes F-16's from the ANG. The A-10's were the best by far to watch at the range.
One of the coolest training runs they would do would be the nap of the earth strafing run. You would stand looking up-range (targets behind you) watching for the aircraft. Suddenly the A-10 would pull up hard right from the deck (trees), climb several hundred feet, roll over on it's back and pull a positive G maneuver into a fairly steep dive, roll over again, and fire the GAU. Keep in mind you are watching this with the targets at your back. So, as the A-10 rolls over to fire, it feels like you're looking straight at the gun. You see a huge cloud of smoke, then a second later you and everything around you shakes as the sound of the gun firing gets to you, then immediately after that, you and everything around you shakes again from the sound of the rounds hitting the ground a few hundred yards behind you. The pilot had to be finished firing BEFORE mid-field, so all of the firing is happening right overhead. BRRRRRRRRRRTbrrrrrrrrrrrrrrt
An old VHS video from the 90's gives a tiny bit of the view. Skip to around 6:00 for an A-10 strafing run. Still nothing like being there.

Part 2: Padded Room Special Collection Of Junk That More Than Likely Will Be NSFW
I remember lying on the berm at the Saudi/Iraq/Kuwait border watching A-10s light up Iraqi artillery and tanks before we breached the berm.
Watching that as a battery of 155 howitzers was firing right behind us. It was pretty rowdy
