After his piston engine blew up in flight, Mike Patey modified his bush plane by installing a PT6 turbine along with a bunch of additional mods to handle the power.

The plane can take off in just 110 feet, climb at 4,000fpm, cruise at 180mph at up to 28K, and land in just over 100ft. With just the pilot and low fuel the plane has a 1:1 thrust ratio.

Awesome rig, but I wonder about it’s actual bush-worthiness. Might be some issues starting it at a remote airstrip on a -40 dF morning, or refueling from 5 gallon cans. Maybe I still harbor a last-millennium visión of the bush.

It's a turbine. More reliable than a piston which was in it originally. There are tricks for cold starting any engine. These engines are used all over the AK bush and Siberia. Sounds like the bush he is flying in is in southern UT anyway.

I know, but the trick I was thinking of for starting a cold Super Cub engine in the AK bush was draining the oil and taking in to a warm cabin or hanger for the night. That’s the part in my post about my dated concept of the (AK) bush, but if he’s in UT/lower 48 I guess it’s all good.

It was the tundra tires that got me to thinking AK bush flying.

Tons of STC's out there using the PT6 these days. Had a friend with a JetProp conversion on a Malibu. Same company was adding them to get an STC on a Baron. Bunch of STC's on ag planes these days too.

    We might differ on "Why?".
