That's a cool graph...
I would argue that Iommi defines the band.
I do loves me some Ozzy, through Madman, but consider Dio a better vocalist by far. Both of their show styles were always a bit campy for me though.
For raw power, I'll start with Ian Gillan. His only album with them, Born Again, is in my top 3 for them all inclusive. Atomic vocals and more tempo over some aggro lyrics:
" and i was turning, tires burning
the ground was in my sky.
I was laughing, the bitch was trashed
and death was in my eye..."
I saw the H&H tour in '08 I think and man, lemme tell ya, those guys killed it. Absolutely flawless renditions. I was in the 6th row center and it was so good. Queensryche opened and although they were solid, I hadn't much cared for them since before op mindcrime.
But when Alice Cooper came out, I was blown away by the crowds reaction; triple the enthusiasm in about a nanosecond.
And that old guy put them to shame. What a fucking set, like he was 18.
Then the hum of the volume went up and Sabbath put out such an amazing set and Dio was on it at every click; My head was buzzing for 2 days...
Watching Tony Iommi's fingers flit around that neck was truly unbelievable to sync with sounds I've air-played for decades.
The bootleg shirt -$20
The booth shirt - $40

See, for me, it is original lineup. Period. If you break that down, then Geezer Butler. Sure, there a bunch of people who cycled through Black Sabbath and some of them were really good. But it wasn't Black Sabbath, despite what they called themselves. H&H was pretty good. And points for using a different name. However, they probably only did that because they had to.

Original lineup no question. Iommi among the best, totally underrated, and Sabbath wouldn't be Sabbath without Geezer and Ward. Oh yeah, and Ozzy. If I had to choose one, it'd be Iommi.
Saw them just on the Never Say Die tour, in Oakland. I think it was the year before Geezer got knocked out by a beer bottle?
Don't get me wrong I like RJD, but mostly when he was with Rainbow. And Ian Gillian when he was with Deep Purple.

Posted the chart because it amused me to learn the true headcount in that band.
Lineup: original for sure. Iommi is the riff king, and the sound of his '65 Gibson SG with P90's through the 100W Laney defined metal.Last edited by Norseman; 11-09-2020 at 11:49 PM.

So, one time when I was 14 or so, I bought what I thought was a microdot from some dude outside the Sabbath/Cult show at Nassau Colliseum. Turns out it was four way windowpane, and it was the first time I took acid. The girl I came with got backstage, so I was left in the 17th row, tripping my balls off, surrounded by really intimidating looking NYC leather/metal/kinda fetishist looking dudes. I was really nervous, and one of the burliest dudes saw that I was tripping, and chilled everybody out. Turned out super-cool, and I really enjoyed seeing colors come out of the speakers as Dio blew the doors off.
B.O.C. was pretty good too, but not as good as Sabbath.
At the end of the night I had to drive my female friend’s Yellow VW bug home...I had never driven before, it was 2:00 am, and I got lost in the Bronx. Still tripping. We made it home around 4:00. The girl wouldn’t tell me exactly how she got backstage and stayed there all night, but I had a pretty good idea. She was like, 16.

But then you’d be wrong! Check the official Sabbath thread on this here website. There is no Sabbath after Ozzy! Just some Hobbit with former members of!

I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.
