IMHO she's far better looking without make-up. Never liked the pin-up look that much.

She doesn't crack "the list", but I have always had a little thing for her.

from the photographer
This is the first photo of a serie of 4.
Every year in the West Sumatra, in the Minangkabau highlands, to celebrate the end of the rice harvest is held a traditional bull race: the Pacu Jawi (literally “race cow”). This unique sport takes place in muddy fields, at least 5 men are needed to bring the cows in position, the jockey stands on the two cows’ plows and grab their tail. As the men release the beasts, our jockey keeps his balance by skiing on the plows, and bites the tails to gain speed. Of course, it happens the cows run in opposite directions, giving the jockey the opportunity to perform a beautiful face plant in the mud.
The difficulty for the photographer (me) is to stand in front of the raging bulls speeding in my direction as I am filling up my memory cards. I’ll explain all that with the next photo
How to take pictures of those cows sprinting with all their speed and power towards you? Easy, stand in front of them!
I gave all my stuff to my fiancée, and all I have is a t-shirt, my cargo shorts, the 40D and the 70-200mm. I’m standing naked feet, my right leg is deep in the mud of the rice field, up until a bit below my knee and my left one is on the dry dirt of the bank. I am pretty sure I am going to get wet and covered in mud.
When the first cows arrives right on me, I’m shooting in burst mode, ready to get out of their way. One thing is certain: if I don’t move, they will run me over! The message having being received loud and clear, I shoot until my self-preservation instinct tells me to get out of there! Pushing on my left leg to get my right one out of mud, I just have the time to step one meter away from the rice field and turn around to protect my camera from the mud projections. Once the cows have passed, I’m back in position, because I’m not the only photographer around and I have a pretty cool spot!
How we got to this race is also quite the story made of luck and meeting good people…
We had a disastrous night hike in the Gunung Merapi, we went for the sunrise, and we met rain, storm, torrents of water on the trail. After that we were exhausted and we headed to Danau (lake) Maninjao to rest. We spent three days there instead of the two we had planned. The very last night we met an Indonesian man, Al, and his girlfriend who proposed us to go to a bull race. The only issue is that we already had booked our bus for the next day. It turned out that Al knew the owner of the bus company, called for us, and changed our ticket… yup! I wouldn’t believe it either, but all that is 100% true!
Early in the morning we left Maninjao on scooters and drove about 2 hours. We arrive quite early on the celebration place, enough time for us to enjoy a bakso soup and to find the right spot from where to take the pictures.
A quick look shows us there is high probability the cows will run towards where we are standing, after giving all my stuff to my fiancee (read part 2), we took place and waited for the show to start. It was a good thing to arrive early as most of the field is surrounded by locals and photographers.
This day I took 1300 pictures, it was full of emotions for me to see this show, to be mainly among locals (very few tourists), and I enjoyed a lot Al’s company and the stories about his country and his culture. I fell only once getting out of the mud in hurry, a tiny scratch on my elbow but the photo gear survived, and I did not take a cow in the face which is a very good thing!
