Just read an overly long but good article about the reason behind Game of Thrones early season greatness and it's later seasons not-so greatness was that it started as a sociological story and ended up as a psychological one. It was great when the drama was about the sociology of the Game because everyone - like Ned, Rob, Catalyn - was replaceable. Once the writers ran out of GRR material they reverted to the standard Hollywood playbook which is based on the psychology of the characters and consequently it is a lot harder to just kill people off. It explains a lot about the structural weakness of later seasons. I'll try to find the link. I hadn't thought about it on those terms but thought it explained the suckyness perfectly.

Someone posted that link in this thread a few pages back. I wonder how many shows have been dissected in Scientific American before.
