Whoa!!! Large!!
A very rare thing happened early this morning in Squaw Valley USA. Ski tracks were put down on a place of the mountain that has never seen tracks on it before. I received this text at 12:43am this morning, “Tim, I just did a first decent on tram face.” Sure enough when I awoke this morning two tracks were dangling from the top skiers left of Tram Face. Here are some photos and the text message I received this afternoon. Full ReportComment

Really?? Not trying to bust your balls, but...Sad as well are those sideslips on top of tram face. 100 vertical feet of sideslippin the new first descent style of 2011 in cali?
It would have been cool sans rope with real turns. Sorry bros, looks like I best move back to Les Praz and continue to praise Boivin and Siffredi ere day.Comment

Hells yeah, man! Nice to see what you're doing when you turn on that jetpack and leave us in the dust. Rowdy, buddy!
I'm assuming you used that "explosive" emoticon to denote the explosive diarhhea from the ice enema I gave myself in uR fIlMzZz.
And seriously, it needs to be said that the real test of burl is hucking Kodak when you're alone and no-one is watching. We got separated, Dheli rolled up before we got there, and tho we got to exert no peer pressure on him, he just effing sent it solo. Balls: solid steel; check.
SuPu, I thought you skied off that thang with your iPhone filming in one hand, right?
Post it up, man!

NSR, but any Reno (and Tahoe) mags that want to head out for a drink tomorrow night (Thursday), I'm hangin' some pictures up at the Jungle Vino wine bar for the month and the opening reception is tomorrow evening. Music by "A Thousand Years at Sea" and two other artists are hanging their stuff up in the cafe and breezeway next door.
and since this is the stoke thread...
some skintrack stoke...
I've really had too much fun stowing the camera and riding pow this year to stop and set up some slutty schralpie shots

Phil, I'm glad to hear it!
Jungle Vino wine bar is at 246 West 1st St. Close to the corner of 1st and Arlington and very near the whitewater park. Upstairs (though still street level) from the Sierra Tap House which faces the whitewater park (Jungle Vino faces 1st street) and next door to the Java Jungle coffee shop.Comment

At $60 a lift ticket, they should open everything they can. I have a job and can't ski a lot of weekdays. It's shit like that that makes me like the mountian, but not the ops so much. If they are purposely leaving stuff closed to save powder for themselves, that's a shitty way treat your customers.Yo stuff like them opening Grizz on a none weekend is a hook up from patrol when its possible. You can thank them after you ski the powder(or as they ride up grizz lift).
The south side is probably skiing ok, it gets lots of sun. I am sure there is some goods there. Cant believe they sold out and "Added" so many more acres of locale powder stashes....

The “first descent” down the tram face looks pretty lame. It is one thing to rappel into a chute that is not skiable from the top. When you sideslip on belay all the way down to a chute that is skiable from many different approaches then you can’t really claim skiing that “first descent”. You can only really claim skiing the tram chute which has been done a quite a few times. Yawn… Baker still has the best line down the tram face to date. Next…Last edited by Lachnload; 01-05-2011, 01:11 PM.Comment

Don't know if anyone else got stuck on the upper mountain at Squaw this past Thursday or Friday due to power outages, I did (both days), and was very impressed with Squaw's handling of the situation. Got a $20 voucher the first day, and two $40 vouchers the second day when I pointed out that I'd gotten stuck twice. New Years day not being a blackout day was a real nice bonus as well. Apparently, the issue was with a power company fuse melting.
And here's a video of me hurting myself:On December 30 at about 12:00pm, the power lost one “leg” from the bottom of Headwall to the upper mountain. We immediately pursued contingency plans to activate backup power, and contacted the power company, NV Energy. A fuse located on a power pole operated by NV Energy near Granite Chief Road had failed. It took us 30 minutes to locate the fuse following the failure, at which point the power company was already en route. Upon arrival, the power company repair crew replaced the fuse, which they found had melted. We were advised, based on the state of the melted fuse, that failure was attributable to a defective fuse and was not related to the mountain’s infrastructure or operations. To ensure that guests could get their lift ticket’s value, we ran the lifts for an additional 20 minutes in the afternoon that day.
The same fuse failed again on December 31 at 11:00am. Again, our team immediately mobilized backup power supplies and generators. NV Energy was on site within 30 minutes. A decision was made to replace the fuse with a larger set, which had to be sourced and delivered. The process took about 30 additional minutes. Again, we ran the lifts later that afternoon and provided vouchers for those particularly affected by the outage. NV Energy has made modifications to this "leg" that ensures this failure will never be replicated. Furthermore, we have requested replacement of the fuses in the other two legs of power with the same larger size to prevent any future problems. As an additional precaution, Squaw Valley will be engaging NV Engergy and other specialists to conduct a thorough review of our power lines, our internal infrastructure, and our operational methodology to ensure that the potential for future failures is minimized.
