I purchased a pair of technica magma's this last season and I really like the boots but I have to say I'm a little disappointed in the rivets that hold the buckles on the bracket that is rivited to the boots. I skied on thes boots about 90 days or more this last season for a total of 112 days skied in colorado and right at the end of the season my rivets broke. I know alot of people have this problem and it's really annoying if you ask me considering I skied on them for 1 season. Anyways I am not a fan of replacing the entire buckle and paying someone a bunch of $$ to do it, so I came up with a fix. As long as the barcket that is rivited to the boot is still rivited and the buckle's rivits are the only thing broken then you are in luck and this will work for you.
What you will need,
-2 cheap rivets from a hardware store "true value will have them"
-2 part epoxy to glue the rivets in
-sandpaper
-a pliers
Here are some pictures of my broken buckle.
Basically all you need is 2 cheap rivets that you can find at most any hardware store that has a bolt wall with pull out drawers. I got mine from truevalue in silverthorne,CO for 15 cents a piece. Here is a picture of the rivets, make sure you bring your buckle with you to get rivet's that fit perfectly. Here is a picture of the buckle and the 2 rivets.
I tested the rivets before I glued them in and found that it was a tight fit to get them through the 2 holes on the buckle bracket that is riveted to the boot so I got them started a little bit and then forced them through the holes using the pliers with one end on the rivet and the other on the buckle.
The buckle may not want to go all the way down if the rivets stick out to far so what I did was take the rivets back out and sand down the backs of them with sandpaper to make them thinner. Hold the rivet with the pliers to sand the back of it. You may or maynot have to do this, or maybe you will do it before you force them into the bracket, your choice if you don't want to have to take them back out. I was using trial and error. Here is a pick of me sanding the rivet.
Once I got the rivets sanded down enough to where the buckle would go all the way down flat against my boot I used epoxy to hold the rivets in place. I only used a small amount on the insides on the lower half of the rivet so that the buckle could still move freely on the rivets. You just need enough to keep the rivets in there, the force from pressing them in should be enough to hold them but epoxying them is a sure thing. I also used some take to hold the buckle up and out of the way to keep epoxy from getting on it. Here is a picture of what I am talking about.
This is a cheap fix and in my opinion alot better then paying someone alot of money to have them put a different buckle on your boot that will probably be held in by a screw instead of a rivet. Save some money and get some use out of a perfectly good buckle. Hopefully this helps someone save some $ and salvage their broken boots. Hopefully technica has fixed this problem on their newer styles of boots by not using piece of crap china rivets anymore.
I have no idea how long this will hold for but I will let everyone know at the end of this next season.
Good Luck everyone
