MPC#52 Blur (7/28-8/13)
This MPC is about the creative use of blur in photography. Types of blur that come to mind are Bokeh, motion blur, and focus blur. There may be more, but here are a examples of those three:
Selections will be based on the quality and effect of blurring, as well as overall photographic merits.
Enjoy, and have your entries in by August 13th.
RULES:
1. Photos must be taken within the time period of the contest.
2. You may submit 3 photos during the competition.
3. The contest moderator will choose 5 photos to be voted on.
4. The winner will get a happy feeling in his/her pants. (That is a rule by the way, not an option.)
5. In the event of a tie, the contest moderator will have the deciding vote.
6. Winner will be the contest starter/moderator for the next comp.
7. The winner has 3 days to start a new contest or 2nd place becomes the new winner.

Since the MPCs are as much about learning as friendly competition, I thought I'd include links to some basic descriptions of the techniques I listed above. Beginners should be able to do well in this MPC as the first two are very easy and the third just takes a little practice.

thanks for the links OB. i'm a photog jong using a Cannon S90. using the manual settings for the first time lately. hand held, i don't have a tripod. am i on the right path here? how would one make the background more blurred? would this shot fit the criteria of the contest? thanks for any feedback.

I think it's a good entry. I like how the focus is in the red spikey part, which is so busy it's hard to focus one's eyes on it.
It will be hard to blur the background more with a point and shoot. The combination of having a small sensor and not having a lens with large aperture limits your options. Considering your camera, well done indeed. However many are in a shit ton.

I dunno, probably would have been better if you were on Dynafits.
Anyways, here's my 1am advice:
Lower f/stop = blurrier background. It looks pretty bright out, so you probably could have put the S90 on f/2 and the resulting shutter speed would have been high enough to not worry about a tripod. If it wasn't you could bump up the ISO. Plus, the built-in IS of the S90 is pretty good; today I took a bunch of handheld shots at 1/30 of a sec that are sharp.
If you were already at f/2, then I have no ideas how to get less depth of field.
Otherwise, nice punchy colors.Putting the "core" in corporate, one turn at a time.

single - LOVE that photo! Very nice!
Two shots from yesterday.
Entry 1 - An accidental blur photo. This Bavarian bloke rode through as I was taking the picture. What began as more of a boring travel snapshot in Garmisch, Germany turned in to a shot I kind of like.
Entry 2 - I took this in Oberammergau, Germany while walking to the downtown section of the town from the car park. I liked how the light was hitting these flowers while the background was shaded. The bees didn't mind me snapping a photo of them either.

Dig that second shot DB. The bees make it. What lens are you shooting? I'm not loving the bokeh.

We've won it. It's going to get better now. You can sort of tell these things.

I like motion blur, and the kid is sleeping through the night. I need to sneak out, soon.
NOT ELIGIBLE
I've concluded that DJSapp was never DJSapp, and Not DJSapp is also not DJSapp, so that means he's telling the truth now and he was lying before.
