Guardians of Justice
Lame parody presentation of a dark version of the Justice League. Heavy handed 80's cartoon graphic style mixed with live action and constant queues from period video games. Opening scene is superman counterpart committing suicide on live TV. This sets the depressive tone that never lets up.
I wanted to like this, made into eps 2, but just had to stop.

Anyone watch Love is Blind? Watched one thinking I’d hate it, it now I’ve seen both seasons. Like a car crash you can’t look away from.

ANIMAL WORLD
Sure, on the surface this film will feel like a Squid Game riff-off, until you realize that it came out in 2018.
Furthermore, it is based on a manga started back in 1996 called Kaiji, which the creator of Squid Game has cited as a major influence.
But enough with the quick history lesson, Animal World may be an uneven film, teetering between violent nightmare scenarios and mind-numbing mathamatical gambling addict numerology, yet it has enough gonzo bonkers moments to keep you watching; the opening subway melee is off-the-nuts.
Oh, and there's a Gordon Gekko cameo as a bonus.

HEADSHOT
Nothing about this film is subtle, from the all-too-obvious title to the generic storyline, and the in-yur-face ultra-violence. Like a porno, the story here is merely for the sake of loosely holding together the money shots, in this case glorious bouts of fists and fury.
Full disclosure, I have never taken any courses in martial arts so have no clue how realistic any of the myriad fight scenes in this film are, but from a strictly cinematic standpoint, they are fantastic. Director Timo Tjahjanto has instilled the action with iinterestingly composed close-ups, cool overhead shots, and a slick neon/metallic sheen that hi-lites the brutality of the choreography. Eschewing the oft boring Western aesthetic of "let's blow a lot of shit up," here it's all bare knuckles, elbows, and knees; you literally smell and feel the blood, sweat, tears, and broken bones. If that ain't enough for you, there's also a heaping dose of knife fights and blazing guns.

THE HOUSE
This is an intriguing animated anthology whose segments all revolve around the same house.
On the surface it's a dark and whimsical fairy tale, yet lurking underneath are some interesting psychological and philosophical ruminations on house vs home, obsession, and family.

RESTLESS
A slick and taut little French police thriller is what this film happens to be.
Predictable in spots, surprising in others, it's well paced, well acted, and has a nice balance of black humor and tension.

Lead Me Home is at once very tough sledding; and equally as necessary.

Big Bug. Another campy, fun little romp from Jean-Pierre Jeunet. I'm a big fan of his filmography, but if quirky French films ain't your jam then feel free to skip it. If you DO like his stuff though, then give this one a watch. It's intentionally silly and I had a fun time watching it.
Oh, and the actress who played Jennifer, Claire Chust, is a total smokeshow. A flawless performance by Claude Perron too, who plays Monique, the house robot maid.
Don't expect deep sci-fi or anything like that here. More of a light-hearted riff on suburban life with tech going too far.
EDIT: As usual with foreign films, make sure to watch in the original French audio track. Im not a fan of dubs tho.

Starting watching Raising Dion because my daughter asked.
It’s actually pretty good and not just a kids show.
Alisha Wainwright is also the most beautiful woman I’ve seen in quite a while.

THE DEBT COLLECTOR
Director Jesse V. Johnson (I recommended another of his films, Avengement) several months back) makes wonderful throwback '80s-styled action flicks and this one delivers on the retro chic with lots of fisticuffs, a decent blast of buddy comedy, and a neon gangster noir undertone.
Featuring his frequent collaborator Scott Adkins kicking major ass and Louis Mandylor as a cool and snarky mentor, the film follows the two mismatched co-workers as they trade barbs with an easy chemistry all the while busting heads and breaking kneecaps.
If you grew up in the era when Arnie, Sly, and JCVD were the kings of American action cinema, then this is a nifty slice of nostalgia tinged machismo bravado.

Apparently there is a sequel, called, of all things, Debt Collectors.
It popped up in my NF Recommendations section after I watched the first film.
I have not seen it and am quite skeptical of it given how the original ended.
Granted, the winning chemistry of Adkins and Mandylor keeps nagging at me to break down and watch the sequel, I just feel that the original was such a nice surprise and really didn't warrant a follow-up.

VENGEANCE IS MINE, ALL OTHERS PAY CASH
This Indonesian film is an interesting rumination on masculinity embued with elements of folklore and strange whimsy.
I am sure a bit of the cultural nuances and some of the story were lost in translation, but it is engaging nonetheless, even if a tad slow paced.
It is based on an acclaimed novel of the same name and I am sufficiently intrigued enough by this film that I am eager to read the source material to see how much was changed.

APOLLO 10 1/2: A SPACE AGE CHILDHOOD
Writer/director Richard Linklater tackled high school with Dazed and Confused and college with Everybody Wants Some!! and now he delivers a wonderful blast of elementary/middle school nostalgia with this effort. In many ways it forms a trilogy with the aforementioned films.
Focusing on 1969 era Texas, Linklater unfurls a rotoscoped love letter to suburban childhood teeming with subdued social commentary and a wonderfully wry sense of humor.

I made this post back on 3/12/2020... So, 2 years, 1 month, and 3 days later I finally got around to watching THE PLATFORM.
It's a thought provoking and often brutal examination of social status, survival, greed, gluttony, and politics.
Definitely not for the squeamish.
The ending is a bit abstract, but as such leaves you with quiye a bit to chew on.
RIYL
Cube; 1984; Snowpiercer; The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover
It totally resonates with similar themes as Cube and Snowpiercer. Toss in some 1984, too.
The only part I found a little abstract was the ending.
I think I would have preferred the panna cotta to have been the message...
Sadly, I disagree with it being either awful or a piece of crap. I rather enjoyed it and found the socio-political message to be rather cool (and also depressing).
I do agree that I don't need to watch it again, though. Once is giving me plenty to ruminate on.
While I agree that it was depressing, I feel it had quite a bit of redeeming qualities. There was an underlying message of hope buried under all the masticated food...
Indeed, the premise is timely, heck almost timeless given mankind's continued pursuit of greed and seemingly unquenchable gluttony...
As MF stated, watch the original Spanish version, 'cause dubbing is for suckers!
