    Mike Watt is Hip-Hop, Batches!

Watt has always embodied the full-on punk aesthetic, but he used to rock an N.W.A. sticker on his bass because he felt that rap music was built on the same D.I.Y. mentality as punk.

At any rate, most know Watt from his stints with The Minutemen, fIREHOSE, but his second solo album, Contemplating the Engine Room, is an amazing musical tour de force from start to finish.

This track, however, is one of my all-time favorites (and the Spike Jonze video taps into Watt's hip-hop connection)

"Man, we killin' elephants in the back yard..."

interesting about the hiphop, unfortunately the video is blocked in finland.. i saw him play twice after firehose called it quits ( been into them since I was 13 and bought "flyin' the flannel") .. ball hog or tugboat tour and again in 1999 where his band played a god-awful john coltrane's "giantsteps" cover.. been a while since i got out the minutemen albums, but i still rock firehose a few times a years.

Caught Watt and The Missing Men in Sactown, CA last night at this regal dive dubbed Old Ironsides.
    Show was blistering.
Watt was a teensy bit surly throughout the show, due to equipment gaffs and a few unruly patrons, but overall he wielded the thunder broom with chaotic aplomb.
The trio did a scathing rendition of BOC's seminal "E.T.I." and the rest of the show contained some skirling guitar, kinetic drumming, and, of course, Watt's low-end theorizing.

If you like avante punk and lots of jamming, especially boom-stick bass licks and post-rock-styled guitar, then you might wanna jam econo with Watt and the boys.

Tour is in full swing right now: http://hootpage.com/hoot_dickwatttour2019.html
