I'm thinking I need to turn on subtitles to catch all of the subtleties.

Was channel surfing last night and caught season 1 episode 1 of The Man Who Fell To Earth.
Good acting and looks promising. We’ll see.

Severance is good. I was iffy at first, but it pulled me in. It’s dark and funny and very strange in a good way. Epic cliffhanger to end the season.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

MIDNIGHT DINER - streaming on NF
I stumbled upon this little series the other night and am really digging it.
Imagine Cheers without the snark and mean spiritedness and with quirkier (and more interesting) characters.
There seems to be undercurrents of both Shinto and Zen running through the episodes, as well, which adds a rich dimension to the characters and storylines.
The show also provides a nice juxtaposition between quiet introspection and ribald and borderline blue humor.
I really wish there was a restaurant like this near me...

Enjoying it as well (through episode 7 so far). Well done, trippy, and pretty cringey at times. Always the possibility it could go down a Lost hole, (like WestWorld), but hopefully that won't happen.
Ben Stiller directed most of the episodes!
Yup, very Japanese in that regard. Definitely gets a little, er, freaky at times.
Nice cap to an evening of more intense streaming content.
And, speaking of Japanese porn, you may enjoy the intro segment to this episode...
Workin' Moms: S1 E6
Series created by Ivan Reitman's daughter Catherine. Dan Aykroyd plays her character's father, and shows up for a few episodes.Last edited by fomofo; 05-13-2022 at 12:02 AM.

I watched all of both series (Midnight Diner and MD Tokyo Stories) and probably couldn’t tell you exactly why I liked it. At first I didn’t even realize they were separate series, I just figured I had dozed off and missed some episodes.
Got sucked with the opening credit scene driving into Shinjuku etc. oddly peaceful/tranquil despite all the neon.
I struggle a bit with the acting, but mainly because I don’t know where the line is between overacting and what might be ascribed to a more typical Japanese style (like they’re live action manga characters sometimes)

I actually found the acting somewhat sedate and restrained compared to other Japanese shows and films I've watched where everybody seems to either be screaming or whining.
Apparently it is based on a manga, too.
Asked a Buddy of mine who has been living in Japan for 20 years now and he said that It's very Japanese.

For sure, Gen, the young yakuza character was annoying AF, but he mellows out as the series progresses.
I also think his loud, grating demeanor was meant as a counterpoint to Ryu (the seasoned yakuza), showing the brashness of youth versus the more calm and introspective nature of someone more mature.
Pretty much all of the annoying characters were the ones who needed to grow, both mentally and spiritually and they were few and far between and juxtaposed by other, cooler characters, that I didn't mind so much.

I'm going to have to check that out, see if it's influenced by Tampopo at all.

I just watched the first three episodes of the new Kids in the Hall on Amazon Prime. Some pretty funny moments. Fans of the original will enjoy it.

“The North Water”: amazing miniseries. Just finished watching it on AMC, but think it might be on prime as well.

100 Foot Wave. A series about Garret McNamara and his involvement with developing the scene in Navarre. Crazy
