No one ever talks about Rick and Morty around here. Am I really the only person here watching the greatest animated show in the history of television? New season just started. Any show that can make its fans wait two years just to see 10 episodes has to be awesome in order to survive. Don't take my word for it, this show has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 9.3 imdb score.
What's this show about? Um...well, imagine if Frank Gallagher from Shameless was a mad scientist, the most wanted criminal in the galaxy and the smartest man in the multiverse with the ability to travel through all it's infinite dimensions. As the smartest man in the multiverse, Rick believes he answers to no one, no law and no moral code. He's like Dr. Who but with absolutely no morality. Rick is a raging alky. He is abusive to his family. He kills with no regard for life or with any sense of remorse. He even refuses to answer to all the other Ricks in infinity, declaring himself to be "the Rickest Rick." Rick is fucking hilarious and he's also a truly, truly horrible sociopath at the same time. After witnessing Rick spread havoc across dimensions, Morty warns his sister that Rick is "like a demon or maybe he's a super fucked-up god" and that is a fair description. In one episode, Rick meets the Devil, beats him at his own game and then beats his ass for laughs.
Morty is the poor sap who has Rick for a grandfather. He is Rick's foil. Where Rick often does the right thing for the wrong reasons, Morty inevitably does the wrong things for the right reasons. Where Rick is a fearless, coldhearted genius, Morty is a tad stupid, indecisive and emotionally high strung. His adventures with Rick are an endless series of emotional and physical trauma. This is one of the darkest comedies ever made. There has never been a character like Rick before. This show is truly original. The writing is brilliant. Good guest stars, too; this episode features Stephen Colbert. The first three episodes of season 1 are so-so and then at episode 4 the show finds its footing and becomes truly great. This is one of the most meta, cerebral comedies out there today.

If you're a fan of martial arts or Bruce Lee The Legend of Bruce Lee on Netflix is an interesting series. It's certainly not perfect, but it kept me interested through the end. It is subtitled as it is from China, which also means there is a definite national centrist feel to the show, and there are some creative additions or changes to what really happened, but hey its TV.

Manhunt: the Unabomber, is a pleasant surprise.

08-17-2017, 03:21 PM #533It makes perfect sense...until you think about it.
I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.

The pilot episode of The Deuce seems really promising. It looks like The Wire crossbred with Boardwalk Empire. Porn presents a similar angle to Prohibition, except in reverse. When the prohibition on obscenity ends, sex workers and pimps see a new economy arising in porn. But, right behind the savvy sex industry entrepreneurs, in comes the Mob.

The Sinner on USA has turned from a simple, "Why did she kill that guy on the beach?" cop investigation, into an unpredictable drug fueled sister-on-sister orgy. Jessica Biel plays Cora the murderer; and who knew she could act so well. The plot twists around Cora's limited, confused, and sometimes deliberately misguided memories of past events. Part of Cora's messed up mind is fueled by her chronically sick sister Pheobe and her religious zealot mother. Bill Pullman plays the cop trying to get to the reason why Cora killed the guy, but has his own broken life that includes masochistic tendencies with a chubby prostitute. The finale promises a big delivery.
The 8 part limited show ends next week. Just like a good book you just can't put down, this show you want more of at the end of each episode.

Damn intense; the 7th episode made me squirm.
On a different note: The second season of Jane Campion's Top of the Lake is out - TotL: China Girl (Sundance). I found the first season a struggle to get through, but the current season is much, much better (so far - 3 episodes in). Bonus: Breinne of Tarth is killing it.
