    Less serious addiction

Alright guys hear me out on this one. I do my work as a composer, a job that requires intensive hours of work throughout the day every day, the majority of which is on my computer notating and such. However, I can not do work for more than 10 or 15 minutes without my mind wandering, making me go on forums like this and facebook and shit, and I basically just waste a TON of time. Does anyone know how to stop this??

I waste about half the time that I am working browsing forums that aren't particularly interesting to me, and when I try to stop myself, my wand just wanders back to them

dude I canceled my facebook a couple years back cuz I would compulsively surf over there and do nothing but stalk people... just makes you feel dirty. Then TGR crept into my life and I can't cut ties. Life circumstances have changed dramatically (egrowing up) so I can't actually shred that much anymore. But I can at least mind ski every day thru TRs of the TGR crowd. Not sure if it's a good thing, but what the fck ever.

I've been curious about this sort of thing in the past... internet addiction is described to a limited extent. google it. I'm no shrink but I reckon it's just a manifestation of ADD/OCD or some shit. And it's probably taking America by storm and soon will do the same to the rest of the industrialized world as more and more people are stuck in front of their fckn computers every day.

I don't know how to stop it either man, sorry. But I'm all ears.

oh and maybe burnout/"boreout" are coupled with compulsive internet surfage. lack of engagement at the job leads to boredom leads to time fillers/wasters ... pretty much every day at my job.

    sorry, end of rant/blog.

You should try pain pills. I hear they are great at making you not give a shit about TGR.

    A few things -

    1. Turn off your internet. If you work at home, what you can do is unplug your router and put the power cord away in some extremely inconvenient place. Might be trickier if you work in an office.

    2. Improve your social life. If you work on your own most of the time, you might be surfing places like this for some human connection. Make a point of going out with friends after work, go for group mtb rides, etc.

    3. Work in a more public place. If you're at home on a laptop, try working in a coffee shop or a library.

    4. Take scheduled breaks. Do something with your breaks that's more fun than surfing the internet. Go for a walk, call a friend, etc.

This is an interesting article on the role of the limbic reward system in compulsive seeking behavior/internet surfing:

I think Derider is probably correct that on some level you are not being satisfied by your work, and so you go into this compulsive surfing mode.

If getting distracted at work and wanting to do things other than working is classified as an addiction, then pretty much the entire world is fucked.

Going to an internet forum to ask advice on how to stop wasting time surfing the web is like asking Rosie O'Donnell for advice on how to stop eating cake.

If you work in an office, orient your computer so everyone that walks by can see what you're doing.

But put a mirror next to your monitor so when someone is approaching you know it... you know... just in case.

I boiled my thermometer, and sure enough, this spot, which purported to be two thousand feet higher than the locality of the hotel, turned out to be nine thousand feet LOWER. Thus the fact was clearly demonstrated that, ABOVE A CERTAIN POINT, THE HIGHER A POINT SEEMS TO BE, THE LOWER IT ACTUALLY IS. Our ascent itself was a great achievement, but this contribution to science was an inconceivably greater matter.

    Thanks Neurodoc.

I've been "finishing up" a PhD for a few years now and productivity has slowed to a crawl. I'm the only one in my lab most days, facing a brick wall. I'm like a neglected puppy whenever there are people around. The days I work from home I get 10X more done at the coffee shop.

Time to make the big push. Goodbye internet.
