Not true multitasking. The apps must be developed with and subscribe to a multitask feature.
While few apps will have true multitasking (Safari, mail, etc...), apps without the multitask code will "pause" when you switch apps, and then "resume" when you switch back; this is not universal multitasking...all the developers must now "fix" their apps to include this feature.
With the JB iphone/ipad you can have true multitasking with any app available.Last edited by iscariot; 04-16-2010 at 01:49 PM. Reason: turrible speeling

Come on Google Android pad.
Looks like its going to be called Dell Streak, iPad killer for short.People should learn endurance; they should learn to endure the discomforts of heat and cold, hunger and thirst; they should learn to be patient when receiving abuse and scorn; for it is the practice of endurance that quenches the fire of worldly passions which is burning up their bodies.

I had the chance to play with one the other day @ best buy. As an avid iPhone user (I'm posting on it now) who rarely goes to a traditional computer, I didn't like it. I was able to have unfettered access for about 45 minutes.
The touch screen works great on the iPhone and works great with the thumbs. The same UI for the iPad is not nearly as nice. Mrs. SIJ, who is a pretty good typist had problems using the keyboard in a tradional way- it just didn't work, yet it is too big to thumb peck.
That was the biggest beef. It was difficult to input information. I'm a fast hunt and peck guy on the keyboard and tried to post here on the iPad, but it was so frustrating trying I just gave up. I was all hot go get one, but no longer.Ski Shop - Basement of the Hostel

On another note Apple seems very pleased to keep their little eco system all to themselves. Sad really...limit creativity and progression for a few extra dollars.

What if you want to start a process on one thread, and then work on something else in another?
For instance: start downloading something in one app, then surf the web in another (while the other is still downloading), and then check e-mail at the same time?
Asking a modern operating system to allow that sort of usage is not an unrealistic request, right?

So what was the bit about requiring developers to design the app to utilize the multi-tasking service, or whatever? I'll openly admit that my knowledge of Apple products is woefully lacking, but my understanding was that the "multi-tasking" capability was equally application and OS based, vs the OS handling it cleanly on its own (independent of any application-side changes). Did I misunderstand that?
If I can actually download any app for an iPhone (regardless of whether the developer designed it for multi-tasking or not) and know that it will make use of the multi-tasking capability of 4.0, then that's a change from what I thought I understood about what 4.0 brings to the table...

I don't know anything about a jail broken phone, but with 4.0 they are opening up certain services to developers that allow them to do certain tasks in the background. But instead of running in the background the app releases it's memory for non critical tasks for other apps. Anyway, that's the gist I get from the developer preview. It's not got anything to do with what the OS could do, it's about memory management on a limited system, and Apple's need for ultimate control of the universe. For developers maybe it is not ideal, but users won't know the difference and I can see apple's point about a better user experience.

As a consumer I would be a lot more interested in an linux or android ipad size device with silly things like card and usb ports. Anyway, I'll wait for ipad 2 at least before I give in. I just bought an ipod touch which is great, but really needs multitasking. It's really annoying I can't listen to npr and check my mail.

So it sounds like a developer has to specifically design their app to be "multi-task-friendly"? I don't have an iphone, but my gf does, so I'm a little less-than-up-to-date on this, but will she have to download "multi-task-friendly" versions of the stuff she's got? Or will downloading the new OS (4.0) take care of that for her? That's (to me) a deal-breaking distinction. If I have to seek out multi-task-friendly apps to reap the benefits of the multi-task capability, it's probably not clean enough for me.
Note: I understand that Apple's trying to do the best they can with the given hardware, while maintaining a reasonable quality of service (if it takes 20x longer while multitasking, people probably won't be impressed), but if other OS options exist (like Android) that handle multi-tasking more cleanly, they're going to have to step up their game....
PS (edit) - re-reading this, I realize that I'm the King of Hyphens. We'll chalk that up to being more-than-half-buzzed (see? did it again!) while typing...

Most apps probably don't need multi-tasking anyway, but yes, apps like skype and pandora that want to do things like play music or receive calls would need to be updated. I haven't seen 4.0 but I would assume most apps do what they do now. save state and release memory. When you switch back to it from another app it should respond quickly and pick up where you left off. So only one app is on screen at a time, and maybe that is the distinction that is confusing. I can see where on a device as large as an ipad people will want a more desktop like experience with multiple apps on screen.

My Buddy from breck blew into hawaii today for a few weeks.
Spent the night in denver. Went out in Cherry creek and bought an Ipad.
Threw it on my bartop while I made killer Thai curry shrimp with pasta
( the love sauce)
Had "breaking bad" season one playing, looked like a cool OS, like my iphone w/ a few tweaks... but you cant see it laying flat, you need to prop it up, like setting your laptop at the right angle...
I said HEY pull up TGR and let me show you the 4/7 pow day at Vail TR. ( He got first chair, bastard!)
IT WONT PLAY ON THE IPAD!
I ripped upstairs, got the trusty Macbook aluminum and Voila! When the guy that scream OMG 25 times while ripping to chair 5, well, my buddy kept saying, I rode that SAME EXACT LINE!
Then you can see him ski right up past the guy with the POV into the single line. Great coincednce!
All black with orange race boots. (right at 3:13 he comes in on the left)

He is pissed! can't see the vimeo stuff.
Oh well....
I thought at first, man, the aftermarket for cases ect will be killer, you need a cool thin aluminum shell that holds it at the right angle to watch, and covers the screen, like this-
